F. W. Curtis, in charge of safety matters and fire prevention, together with Mr. Blackfan, insurance engineer, were recent visitors in Helper, inspecting building, fire fighting apparatus, etc., and found conditions entirely satisfactory. A fire drill was called and the volunteer fire department at the shops displayed their usual 100 per cent efficiency. Congratulations. W. J. Tapp, fuel supervisor, recently visited Helper and most of the mines in Carbon county, in line with his usual tour of inspection. A. C. Shields, vice president and general manager, together with superintendent Hugh Wilson and Trainmaster J. R. Loftis, made an inspection of the railroad property in Carbon county last week. It is gratifying to note the steadily increasing output of coal in Carbon county, which is responsible for the employment of a considerable number of furloughed employs. G. H. Hicks has returned to work as night yard master at Helper. C. W. Dickenson, superintendent of refrigerator service, recently visited this territory on one of his regular tours of inspection. Agent F. L. Gross is laying off a few days, and is being relieved by Relief Agent D. K. Groussman. Several trains of silk from the Orient, enroute to eastern market in New Jersey, have passed over the Rio Grande recently, being run as specials and making schedule time. Clerk Fred Lees has been laying off for some time on account of ill health. He is improving gradually, however, and expects to return to work shortly. Clerk H. S. Morrison and family visited relatives in Salt Lake City last week. Scale Inspector Ed McLelland, with his trusty scale test car, is making a tour of mine branches in Carbon county, testing and ad justing track scales and getting them in first class shape for the coming season. Mr. McLelland has just finished testing and repairing scales on the Colorado line, a trip which has consumed about seven weeks. J Insurance BUILD NOW! But one berth, that of four-yea- r county commissioner, developed into a contest with Dr. C. R. Fahring of Helper winning the nomination on the third ballot. Four SN'k Nomination Four candidates were present for the nomination, Dr. Fahring, F. P. Fisher of Helper, Clyde Vaught of Price, and Don Hacking of Spring Canyon. The first ballot resulted in votes as follows: Fahring, 24; Vaught, 22'i; Fisher, 14; and Hacking, TVs. On the second ballot, Fahring received 33; Vaught, 22; Fisher, 8; and Hacking, 6. Fisher and Hacking then withdrew, and Fahring won the nomination on the third ballot 48 to 22. David L. Parmley of Consumers com was nominated for two-yemissioner on the first ballot, receiving 381-- votes. The count for other candidates was: Stanley Ed wards, Hiawatha, 18; H. S. Rob-inet- t, Price, 2; Irvin Gerber, Well. ington, 10. The contest for county attorney was closely contested, with Wal ter C. Gease, present incumbent. defeating his opponent O. K. Clay by a vote of 37 to 33. Reva Beck Bosone Chosen Reva Beck Bosone, prominent attorney of Helper, was chosen as county democratic candidate for the lower house of the Utah state legislature, with Wallace Wayman of Price as running mate. George W. Miller of Price, present member of the state legislature, defeated W. F. Olson for the senatorial nomination by a vote of 49 t to iiy2. Urge Lower Expenses The county democratic convention endorsed the state and national democratic platforms and, so far as is compatible with good government, urged lower expenses in the operation of government; endorsed the erection of additional school buildings to relieve congestion at such time as finances shall warrant the expenditure; advocated the use of Utah coal in all public buildings, and pledged the legislative candidates to work for the imposition of a just tax on competing fuels; and further pledged them to seek the establishment of a junior college in Carbon county should the state decide to extend its present junior college system.
