Approval by the I. C. C. of this loan, it is believed, it tantamount to receiving the money, as the board is unable to grant such a loan until after the I. C. C. has approved to Free Picture pic He Denver .... iUlUivil ill d er of it. However, the board invariably in the past has granted such loans as the commission has approved. Will Build Road Recently, Thomas M. Schumak-er- , Western Pacific representative on the D & R G W road, stated construction of the Dotsero cutoff would commence within 40 days after the board had approved the loan to the railroad. This statement has been confirmed by President Pyeatt of the D & RGW, who advises the work will commence promptly upon receipt of the money. Differences between the railroad and minority stockholders have been ironed out thru a compromise agreement by the railroad to purchase minority stock at a later ('ilp, and with approval of the )an by the reconstruction finance rorportion no further stumbling blocks are anticipated. Will tost $3,500,000 The Dotsero cutoff, which will shorten the transcontinental haul 174 miles, will enable the D & R G W to get its perishable and fast freights into Chicago on a running schedule equally as good as that of the Union Pacific, and possibly an hour or two shorter a very import".; it factor and one which at this ime is causing the D&RGWii lose much valuable tonnage. The connection would be with the Burlington out of Chicago to Denver, over the D & R G W line to Salt Lake, and thence over the Western Pacific tracks into San Francisco, a direct tapping of the '. I'aufic coast territory. The Keddie Cutoff Tapping the northwest Is the the Keddie cutoff, connecting Great Northern railroad from a point in Oregon, with the Western Pacific line into Salt Lake. This arrangement of these four great roads is Ideal and one which the companies have been striving for over a long period of year3, and would leave Helper in a most enviable light as one of the most important divisions on the entire route, requiring the employing of a far greater number of men at this point, with extra train crews and additional helper engines. Would Keep Division Investigating recent report that Helper might be changed from its status as a division point, The Journal learns that with the present methods of locomotion there is little danger of losing the division headquarters here. It would require about two years to complete construction of the Dotsero cutoff. Credit Demands Met Without Difficulty May Have to Add Extra Busses CROWDING HELPER PUPILS INTO PRICE SCHOOLS WILL FORCE HIKING OF EXTRA BUS With the junior and senior high schools at Price badly crowded as 4 a result of eliminating the junior high school in Helper this year and sending the students to school at the county seat, school busses now are badly overcrowded and it appears another bus may have to be added to the run, according to W. W. Christensen, county superintendent of schools. Carbon high school has a totri enrollment of 868 to date, divided as follows: 9th grade, 231; lOtls. grade, 280; 11th grade, 186; 12th grade, 158; post graduates, 11, The Helper schools this year have but 5u6 students, a considerable drop under that of last year, while the Price city schools are crowded to capacity. The Gordon Creek school this year has 173 pupils, a substantial increase over that of last year. The mine schools, owing to a late start of the working season,, has an enrollment considerably under that of last year, but Superintendent Christensen advises that the total county enrollment thia year will approximate that of a year ago when final reports arj available. Kenil worth Road Work Completed For the Season The improvement work on the Kenilworth highway for this year was completed this week with the placing of an asphalt crossing at the D & R G W tracks south of town, according to Erin Leonard of the county highway department. The approach to the tracks was well graded up and then the crossing thru the tracks and on each side covered with asphalt, making a very serviceable and convenient crossing. Two bad sections of the Kenilworth highway have been asphalted, and the road thru Spring Glen has been given a like surface, advises Mr. Leonard. The road crew now will start on the Gordon Creek road, cleaning up weeds and getting the Uilche3 In readiness for winter. Aboiit IS men are being employed, alternating crews each week. The men employed are those who have been receiving aid from the county, receiving one half their pay In cash and the balance applying against food and clothing aid which they have received.
