One oi' the greatest works of the American Legion is the junior baseball program of the American ism committee. The bringing together of half a million boys of alL walks and stations in life into one great nationwide program, imbued with a more thoro understanding of American ideals and "principles, is a problem the Leg ion solves each year in the junior The Legion baseball program. brings these boys together in an activity designed to teach practical and concrete citizenship lessons thru the playing of America's own great game of baseball. If the Legion is te continue to build for a better American thru the program, it is necessary that a greater number of boys be reached by an active, planned program of mass participation. Boys between the ages of 12 and 1$ who are interested iu this program in Helper should indicate their desire and willingness by registering at the office of Gleu Ballinger commander of the local post of the Lesion, up stairs In the Henry Hall building. this week. Parents Can Help Parents who are interested iu having their children play supervised and organied baseball can be of assistance by having their sons register. Unemployment, with the closiny of schools earlier this year throws hundreds of boys and young men on the streets with nothing hut an abundance of leisure time. A tew dollars wisely spent in direct ing the activities of these boys will pay big dividends to the com munity, compared to the destruction of property, juvenile delin quency, unsound hygiene, social and mental characteristics which are sure to grow without the pro gram. Thru the program we find the boy subjected to discipline, train ed to be alert, skillful of movement, his very perception quick ened. If his baseball coaching is properly supervised, the boy is taught to be courteous and fair. He is taught respect for rules, loyalty to teammates, friends and community, a spirit of teamwork and cooperation, a gameness and sportsmanship with a democracy of the playground that is everlasting in good citlzeuHhip. If the Legion Is to make the Junior baseball activity the out standing piece of Americanism in Utah, which it is hoped It will be this yej.r, it is vitally necssary that the Legion keep uppermost the teaching ot citizenship and character, and not consider the winning of the championship the main objective.
