Economic demands for beaver and deer hides return to Willow Creek The first immigrants to the land which was to become the United States of America survived, in part, because of the abundant wildlife. Life in the new world was demanding but offered the raw materials and challenges that would make America great. Early immigrants to the eastern U.S. reported daily contact with animals like bears, bison and panthers. According to some reports many of these animals were incredible specimens: catfish in Ohio; 25- - 6-- America's recording area or not. Only time will tell. This area is rough and rugged and is not suitable for any animals except deer and elk. The transplant was made, with the hopes that the elk would return to Willow Creek each winter to utilize this excellent winter range. To enable .Division biologists to evaluate the success of the transplant, five cow calf elk were fitted with radio transmitters. These transmitters send out radio signals that enable the biologists to follow the elks' movements. With the aid of an airplane, biologists make weekly flights to monitor these elk. It has been very interesting to follow the movements of these elk. They have roamed over a large area, splitting off into small groups. Two weeks ago the five radio collared elk were monitored at various locations. One was found in the Left Fork of White River, another in Timber Canyon, one in Johnson Creek, another in Kyune Canyon and the last in the West Fork of Willow Creek. The latest flight found one of the radioed eJk in the Middle Fork of White River, one in the Right Fork of White River, another near the Avintaquin guard station, and one still in Kyune Canyon, with the fifth elk not located. But the demands took their price. Deer soon became scarce in New England and the Southeast leading to passage of a law establishing a closed season on deer in all states except Georgia in 1776. The bounties ot the wilderness must have spurred the colonists on to bigger and greater expectations leading to the industrial revolution that was a major stepping stone in America's greatness. Without the resources it would not have been and Mele coming in home from third base. Mele started the rally by opening the frame with a long double to left and after one out, an infield single by Borla moved Mele to third to set the stage for the double steal. Provo struck back in the sixth inning by scoring three runs in an uprising that brought Grundy out of the bullpen to relieve Jewkes. Jewkes, although suffering from some control problems, appeared to have the situation well in hand until the sixth when four straight singles by the Provo crew and a couple wild pitches accounted for the Provo runs. Ud to that point he had issued only two hits, a single in the second frame and a double the next inning while hurling shut out ball. He escaped a serious situation in the opening inning when Todd Balser connected on what should have been a triple, but the Provo catcher missed first base in his race around the bases and the alert Helper defense relayed the ball to the initial bag for the putout, eliminating the base hit. With the score standing at 4;3 in the bottom half of the sixth John Pappas came up and duplicated his older brother's feat by picking on one of Jorgenson's fast balls for a towering home run over the right field fence.
