The results were amazing to say the least, over this period of time the I children in the Helper Schools had 66 percent less cavities than other schools in the county. The condition improved from one year to the next and is continuing to improve. Local Dentists can readily tell when one of Letters to the Editor their patients has been the Editor: It is not my intent to get involved in an argument or controversy over the good and bad points about fluoridated water. I do feel in reading the two local papers last week that some should be forthcoming relative to the good qualities and benefits of fluoridated water in the City water system. I had the privelege of serving Helper City as its Mayor for nearly twenty years, all of this period the residents of Helper drank fluoridated water. Before the Helper City Council decided to fluoridate the City water supply they conducted a To in-p- Study distribution system very thorough investigation as to the benefits of fluorides in the water. We had correspondence with the United States Medical Authorities, the Dental State and Association, National, Utah State Board of Health, the local Medical and Dental Authorities, our local Doctors and Dentists, the response we received was in every respect favorable, we were couraged to go ahead and fluoridate Helper Cities water supply. We did this and kept very close check on the results of the dental examinations conducted each year throughout our (Cont. from Page cited the The should be gridded so all points in the system would be served by not less than four-inc- h pipe fed from each end or by a pipe. en- 1) Fire Underwriters report which called the city's distribution 1959 system seriously protection whatsoever. overloaded. This census is being taken as a service to the community as a part of the bicentennial work of the Church of Christ in Carbon ville. The information gathered will be available to any religious or civic group. The census will be compiled and in made public this publication. All those who are not home when the census taker knocks on your door are asked to complete all of the blanks and place a stamp on the form and mail them. This will make the census complete as time will not permit call - backs. The Carbon - Emery Church of Christ has invited others to come and assist in this effort which is a part of a Campaign for Christ being conducted during the first 10 days of August. Many who will be working are teenagers who have special training for this work. The name and religious preference of each family member will be sought. Those who reside in a home at the time of the census will be enumerated at that address. The more cooperation the public gives, the more complete the census will be. In the event you are overlooked and no census taker has been to your door by August 9 8 or call and give the information by phone. 472-535- 637-408- and Helper, outlying areas are to be Price, covered. ( decided to City fluoridate the city water supply, both Dr. Demman and Dr. Dalpiaz were in Council attendance at that meeting, they endorsed our action at that time and have kept close check on the City to see if the practice was being continued. Helper City for many years was the only community in the state that had a fluoridated water supply for its people. At present there are three cities in the state that are fluoridating their water supply. I feel with a track record like this, it should be convincing enough, twenty three years should be proof enough. Relative to fluoridation in the water supply causing cancer, medical authorities claim not. In checking with Dr. Demman relative to a comparison of cancer patients in Helper to other parts of the county or state, attorney, financial advice to a banker or financial consultant. Why then do we listen to an individual who has no expertise in the medical or dental field when it comes to problems involving the medical or dental profession, we prefer to listen to someone in the field in which Mr. Miller specializes in, in preference to our medical experts. There is an indication that a committee has been organized to prevent the Price City administration from fluoridating their water supply, and at the same time force the Helper City Administration to mull over in our minds, would the State Board of Health allow us to put chemicals in our water supply if they were detrimental to our health. The amount of fluoride inserted into the water supply is one part of fluoride to a million parts of water. Lets give this situation some serious consideration, we depend upon our doctors and dentists to use their judgement when treatment is necessary for our ills, why not trust to their judgement when they recommend treatment for our water supply. It isn't thatj we're running short of natural gas. In fact, Mountain Fuel's gas supply is one of the best in the nation. But it takes pipeline to deliver natural gas, no matter how great the supply, and yesterday's pipelines aren't sufficient to meet tomorrow's demands. Mountain Fuel was aware of the problem more than two years ago. In February of 1973, we petitioned the Federal Power Commission for permission to add to our existing system of transmission lines in order to insure continuing reliable natural gas service to all our customers. Had we received the permission in the normally allotted three to six months from the date of application, the much needed Coalville-Bountiftransmis sion line would have been completed in the summer of 1973, and our transmission problem solved. But to date, this permission has been withheld. It isn't as though we haven't supplied the Federal Power Commission with the data they requested in order for them to make a decision. And it isn't as though anyone outside the FPC objects to this proposed construction. But despite our efforts to secure a go ahead, the FPC has kept us hanging. The price is climbing. Anticipating construction approval, we out construction bids. But the hold up will mean that a job which could have been completed for 3.25 million dollars in 1973, will now cost in excess of 4.45 million dollars, and may not be completed in time for us to supply the cold weather heating needs of all our customers. We're not very happy about that! Be-- , cause throughout our 44 year history we've worked very hard to maintain a sufficient supply of natural gas to meet even the greatest demands of our customers.
