Show 4 The Helper Journal Thursday, July 11, 1974 Fire razes barn in Spring Glen A barn SPRING GLEN which has stood on the George Haslum property here for the past 31 years was razed by fire last Friday afternoon. Kiwanis had built up an early lead on some fine hitting by Scott Nielsen who had two doubles, but the Merc boys came back in the late innings to snatch the provided two-bagg- 6-- victory. John Breznick and Don Marrelli shared the pitching assignment for Central as Commission they derailed previously undefeated Mutual Furntiure in the final game before the break. 6-- 4 Central Commission scored early off Bobby Beason but Robert Zelez-nic- k came in to douse the fire and held the winners scoreless over the last two innings. Zeleznick had seven strikeouts over the last three innings. Jeff Hamilton, Marrelli and Richard Mortensen had the big hits in the Central Commission attack. Powell. officer for Carbon Post No. 21 of the American Legion, announced that plans are almost complete for the Annual Old Timers baseball The event is game. scheduled in the Helper ball park for July 21, and will also feature a regulation Legion game matching Helper with the Skyline team from Salt Lake. The Skyline team appeared here this past spring for a practice double header and will be a fine test for the local nine. Skyline is managed by a Helper native Jim Cima and University of Utah football star Steve Marlowe. Mr. Bonza is issuing an invitation for any and all former baseball players of yesteryear to come out and participate in the old timers game. A contingent of former Utah Industrial League stars headed by Orson Bailey and Don Mayne are expected to be on hand for the game. The local American Legion post will serve a dutch lunch in the city park prior to the game for all old timers. The old timers will begin warming up on the field at 6 p.m. and begin play at 6:30 p.m. The Skyline game is slated for 8 p.m. Tickets for the "Old Timers" night activity are now on sale and may be purchased from members of the Legion team for $1. "We were promising our children a bon fire but not a barn fire," said Lea Haslum, adding that the Price police were searching for her husband, George, to tell him about the fire.
