Ever see the facts and figures on car ownership in the U.S.? You would be surprised to learn who is running around in those little foreign cars. Even the automobile workers! Why? One man told me, "I can buy just as good a car made in Germany or Japan for far less money." "How come?" I asked. He explained. "The wage-pricspiral you've heard so much about has sent the cost of cars, and practically everything else in America, e sky-high.- " "And what triggered that?" I inquired, realizing full well that public opinion polls indicate that peo- believe Inflation to be the Ele One Villain in America today. "Oh' he replied cheerfully, "Whenever our union forces through a big wage hike, prices naturally are forced up, too!" "My friend," I begged him, o don't you understand that pay increases without an increase in productivity only defeat your own purpose? You are pricing the very goods you produce right out of the average man's reach including your own? And that you helped cause the inflation you are complaining about?" He looked puzzled. "Here it is, in simple arithmetic," I continued. "The experts estimate that for every 5 cars we Americans purchase from foreign manufacturers, one American worker will lose his job. Last year, Americans bought more than one million imported cars, which were comparatively less expensive than their American-made counterparts, because they were manufactured at lower labor cost. So figure it out for yourself, and you'll have a quick explanation of today's zooming rate of unemployment" The man shook his head in dismay. Plainly, he didn't want to face the truth. It was too disturbing. And like so many other people, he wanted to have his cake and eat it too. Even Marie Antoinette couldn't manage that- ur entire staff wishes you all the life-be- . The politically aspiring Senator Proxmire claims that the bigger companies earn more, and the smaller companies earn proportionately less. Is this an evil? The bigger companies employ more people, sell more goods, and invest more capital. And their capital is furnished by millions of stockholders, and holders of insurance policies. The Senator is confused. These are, in reality, your companies, made possible by your savings. Big or small, when they do well, you do well. fTo wish you WlAt every blessing that Christmas can convey-wit- h all the joy and One of the "consumer benefits" the new U.S. Postal Service arranged for us, dear fellow taxpayers, was a $20,000 bash in the headquarters building here in Washington. What, you didn't receive 'your invitation? Must be .something wrong with the mails! But count on it, the average guy will foot the bill for this party. Or, as a supposed spokesman for the postal service put it, "the cost will be covered by the sale of special souvenir posters." Meanwhile, considering the length of time that it still takes for a letter to get from here to there, there is no real evidence that the new post office set-uis one whit more efficient than the old one. promise of the first glad Christmas day! I don't know whether their assailants went to Attica Prison, but I do know that many Attica inmates had been found guilty of similar crimes. After the Attica revolt, the mass media in America was preoccupied with the plight of the prisoners. Plans were made to improve their tter library facildaily lot in ities, educational opportunities, more recreation time. Of course, there may well be conditions in any prison system that call for reform. But these cannot excuse the taking of hostages, the demands for amnesty or the threats to the lives of the guards and other prisoners. It's all well and good to shed tears for the prisoners; but who weeps for the wives, children and parents of the mur dered men;? Is it logical for us to expect the North Vietnamese to simply release U.S. prisoners of war if and when President Nixon sets the date for our withdrawal from the Indochinese scene? When, at the end of a war, has it happened before? Back iri 1954 Hanoi violated its own solemn pledge to release prisoners of war under the same circumstances. The Geneva Agreement was obviously never more than a piece of worthless paper to the cunning North Vietnamese who avow they will Commu-niz- e all of East Asia. But how quickly people forget!
