Show THURSDAY. JULY 26, 1945 THE HELPER JOURNAL and CASTLE GATE NEWS and Mrs Y"ene Edgar Johnson were called to Salt Lake last week because of the illness of their daughter Mrs Fay Woodward. Dennis Huff, son of Mr and Mrs Manse Huff, was a Salt Lake visitor Wednesday where he was officially signed to the Navy. He will now await his call. Phillip Zmerslikar of the Navy and wife from Salt Lake visited last week at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs Frank Zmerslikar. His sister Mrs Ella Bosell of Salt Lake came down with them to visit also. Darlene, the daughter of Mr and Mrs E. A. Mr and Mrs Louis Nougaret and daughter Louise accompanied their nieces, Mrs Eileen Realy of Salt Lake and Miss Lorna Oxburrow of Ely, Nevada, who have been visiting here, to Salt Lake Saturday. Miss Fern Harrison and Miss Beth James came down from Salt Lake to spend the week end and the 24th at the homes of their parents Mr and Mrs Thomas Harrison and Mr and Mrs J. E. James. Some other parents think that college education for girls is not essential, but they want their sons to become educated. In my opinion, there are several reasons why a complete college education is Important for every young lady of normal intelligence and and in some ways it is more important for them than for young men. Here are some of the reasons for this opinion: 1. Since mothers are with their children much more than are the fathers, the mothers should be well trained to guide, teach, and Inspire n TEN YEARS AGO ? their children to the best in life. Surely a woman who has studied will understand the world and her children better than she who has not. Good judgment and leadership do not come to women just because they become mothers. Every bit of training and study will help the intelligent woman. 2 Women are taking an increasingly important part in solving the problems of government and of society. They vote, hold office, listen to propaganda, and make decisions almost as frequently as do men; therefore, they need as much training and experience as do the men if they are to make wise decisions. The welfare of our nation and of the whole world now depends upon an intelligent and educated public, men and women alike. 3 The soundest Investment a woman can make is to Invest in an education. It Is the best insurance a woman could possibly have against want and humiliation in case of widowhood. The average man carries not more than $1000 life insurance, and but few indeed carry as much as $3000. How many years could a widow and her children live on the proceeds from such insurance; but haven't we all seen the widow who has been trained to teach, to nurse, to work in offices, etc., go back to respectable work after her husband's death or illness and make an adequate income for the support and education of her family? Money left from Insurance will soon be spent, but no one can rob ns of of an education and of Its great benefits. Of course, I'd say, "Give your daughters at least two years ofcol-leg- e education and send them to Carbon college to get It; but don't stop there. Do your best to see that they graduate from college." Eugene Milton, son of Mr and Mrs Howard Milton of this city, won Dr. L.
