Now we can all see what the new "jitney-buses- '" look like! Ralls Since the completion of the Janet Street underpass I have noticed that not all the school children who live on the other side of the tracks avail themselves of the snfe way in going to and from school some of them even " do a bit of on the tracks. With the coming winter season this trespassing will become more of a danger to life and limb than ever before and now is the time to instill upon the minds of boys and girls that they use the underpass passageway and keep on using it A local railroad official gave me a circular printed by the Association of American Railroads, Safety Section that should make everyone give serious thought to this matter of trespassing through the yards. On the circular is, the pifture of a boy ou crutches, one leg cut off above the knee, shouting to his little dog, "Get off the track? Smokey; that's how I lost my leg." That deep and if necessary sacrificial love existing between a boy and his dog might well find firm lodgement in the hearts of others. Reference is made to those with powerful influences which if exerted In the right direction would save the, lives of many boys and girls 'and protect others against of the permanently handicap crippled bodies. During the last twenty years nearly TEN THOUSAND BOYS and GIRLS have been killed and more than SIXTEEN THOUSAND SERIOUSLY INJURED while trespassing either on railroad tracks or on railroad trains, ns follows: inclusive Five years-1917-Under 14 years of age kiiiea. RAILROAD NEWS 1,334, injured 1.679; 14 to 21 years of age, killed 1.549, injured 2.G46. inc. Five years from 1922-2Under 14, killed 1,011, injured, 1.329; 14 to 21, killed 1,446, injured 2,529. inc. Five years from 1927-3Under 14. killed 780. injured. 1026; 14 to 21, killed 1,192, injured 2167. inc. Five years from 1922-3- 6 14 years. 678, injured SS4. 11 to Y-8- s "sky-larking- 21, killed 5,660, injured 3,222. This totals up to: Under 14, killed 3.803, injured 4.918. 14 to This class of accidents to those under 14 years of age has been reduced, but this IS not true of those 14 to 21 years of age. This should encourage a careful study as to why boys and girls still under the influences of home are responding to efforts being made to protect them, while those of more mature years are daily risking their lives more frequently and with increasingly disastrous results. The Boy Scouts are doing fine work in building themselves up to a state of vigorous, healthy and useful manhood, and this organization is now actively cooperating in keeping their members off railroad property unless they have a right to he there. The example of the Boy Scouts should be an inspiration to ministers, teachers, Kiwanians, American Legion and other civic leaders; also to police officers of Helper city. If a boj- can he made to remember that if he gets in trouble on a railroad track or train while trespassing his chances are about even that he will be killed; and that if he escapes death, .his chances are about even that he will lose an arm or a leg, we do not believe he would be so quick to hop a freight train or play around the tracks where trains must move.
