The position of the American Federation of Teachers with respect to federal participation in the cost of public education, is based on the inequality of the distribution of taxable wealth which, they contend, can be reached only by the federal government itself. The letter also sets forth "the right of teachers to participate in social or political movements, and in other ways to conduct their lives as citizens without fear of reprisal from boards of education or school committees." BLOCKING RECOVERY The greatest enemies to national, state and district recovery are the various political squanderbunds that seem unable to realize that people in general have about reached the limit of ability to pay taxes, be such levies on property or purse. Many of our legislative officeholders do not understand the temper of the people, that temper being strongly opposed to any more taxation so far as the general public is concerned. The legislators who appropriate and levy additional taxes should realize that every dollar unnecessarily spent means a dollar less for legitimate business. The tax dollar is a dead dollar; every dollar, added to taxes is a stumbling block on the road to recovery. WHAT COMPRISES THE GENERAL PUBLIC? The Associated Industries says: "In all relations between employers and employes in industry, the interest of the consumerthe general public must always be held paramount." It would appear this is a rather contradictory statement, as the "general public" by far is comprised of employes and their families. The statement would have read better had it stated, "employes, who are the general public."
