The country, including Wyoming, didn't understand "the Mormons" in those days as it understands them now and its attitude was correspondingly suspicious and distrustful. During the third of a century which brought deserved esteem to the Mormon people the country grew to regard Reed Smoot as a factor in the national senate so enduring that his services there would be terminated only by death. But Reed Smoot, who had come to national recognition as one of the country's most useful statesmen, one of its sanest and soundest in his patriotic devotion to America's interests, was like other "elder statesmen" engulfed in last Tuesday's to the senate. political landslide and failed of It is an interesting commentary on the flexibility of American public opinion that the fact is regarded with d and the that election of a Mormon to succeed regret, Smoot causes not the slightest ripple of concern. Testimony concerning the character and service of the venerable Utahan is abundant. None of it perhaps is so significant as is a message which was inspired by hostility to him, a message from Cuban sugar producers, a foreign association, gloating over his defeat, a message which reads: "The great American people have given you the reward which you deserve." That insolent message from interests alien to the United States and which regard Smoot as their enemy because he has stood adamantly against their designs inimical to the of the great sugar industry of this country, should be eloquent with "reverse english" in the ears of Americans whom Smoot has labored to protect. It is the highest testimony concerning his worth to the country which he has served with such courageous devotion. It is not a mere expression of spleen against Reed Smoot, but an undesigned revelation of the hope and expectation that, with him divested of official power to oppose, America's interest will be betrayed. Of greater importance, however, is the distressed condition of our farmers, livestock growers and industrial workers.
