Out of the dim geologic past comes a mute witness of the fauna of the early cenozoic era 'n the form of. a giant titanotnere, now on display at the University of Utah geology museum. The find, first of its kind to come to the university, was unearthed recently on the shores of the Green river near Ouray, Utah, by Golden York, curator of the university geology museum. The titanothere is but one of the steppes and in the marshes of the extinct family of the herbivorous mammals which once roved over the steppes and in the marshes of the western part of North America about 100,000,000 years ago, according to Dr. Frederick J. Pack of the geology department of the university. Reminiscent of Rhino. d A first glance at the skull one of the rhinocerors' yet it is broader, longer and about four or five times as massive. The skull is depressed with a pair of caves well to the back, from which protruded, in normal life, two scooplike horns. The nasal cavity is surrounded by two firmly bones. Possessed oi more intelligence and greater mobility than its re-in- the titanothere was the dread of other animals of the period. Its rule is estimated to have lasted about 50,000,000 years. King of its time, and yet today the only trace of it is found in the rock3 of past ages! Its disappearance from the earth has long engaged the inquiring mind of the scientist who has watched eagerly in the attempt to add to the store of knowledge concerning this interesting denizen of the earth when it was covered with a luxuriant growth of plant life. The animal, they are reasonably sure, possessed a much larger brain than any of its predecessors. There is no known relationship between the titanothere and any modern mammal, according to Dr. Fack Just why it passed out of existence is the enigma that may never be solved. Superintendent Christensen stated that our present day condition for careful thought in the operation of our schools, and that policies must be carefully studied before adoption with a view toward endurance. Education today 13 of more importance than at any time in the history of our nation, he saia. The United States has made more real progress than any other nation of the world, her problems each year become correspondingly greater, and her modes of education must keep pace with the forward movement. On the children of today, explained Mr. Christensen, must fall the duties of government of tomorrow and if they are to be able to cope with the increasingly complicated problems which will arise, they must be better and better educated. The desire among children today is as strong or stronger than ever before for education and the opportunity to receive it must not be denied them. Must Make Greater Effort. Because of the ever growing problems of education and the present needs for stringent economy, the public must study more carefully its education needs and make a greater effort to support the schools. Mr. Christensen advises that the schools of today have a greater number of skilled and devoted workers than ever before and sees no reason why our education program cannot be carried out thru the period of depression. . In closing, Superintendent Christensen stated the present is no time for class conflict and that all should realize the future of our government demands that the children of today be properly educ-cate- d. -- BUY AT HOME- - Legion Will Present Play IN LIBERTY HALL THURSDAY, FRIDAY, SATURDAY, NOV. 21, 25, 26 TO BE "The Hill Billies," "The Runaway Bride," and the "Country Lawyer" will be presented in Helper next week by the California players under auspices of Carbon post 21 of the American Legion. , The California Players enjoy a reputation for presentation of plays on the legitimate stage and will present a welcome diversion from the t during their country-wid- e high-cla- ss talkie-- three-nigh- movies stand in Helper.
