COLTON CAUSE HELPER TO BE NAMED AS START' ING POINT FOR RURAL MAIL SERVICE Helper has been awarded a rural mail route, according to information received this week by Postmaster Harris Sim-ons- en from the postoffice department in Washington, which will be placed in operation November 1. The route will serve Spring Glen and continue south on the highway to the Gunderson ranch, about a mile north of the Price city limits. Running north, it will serve Martin and Heiner, eliminating the postoffice at the latter point. Delivery will be by automobile, altho no information is available at this time as to who will be the carrier, this being handled by civil service. Patrons to be benefitted by this delivery, which will commence at 8:30 a. m. and be completed by noon, are urged to sign the petition which now is being circulated for the purchase of mail boxes of a type and design approved by the postal department. Approximately 300 families will be served by the new& rural route, with delivery regularly with the exceptions of Sundays and holidays. For the past year, Postmaster Harris Simonsen of Helper has been gathering data for Senator Reed Smoot and Congressman Don B. Col ton, and these two able representatives of Utah have applied themselves to having the route created, with gratifying results. WATT BRANDON Last evening I listened to one of the most masterful ad dresses of a political nature ever heard. It was President Hoover talking in Des Moines, Iowa, and here at Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, it came off the air more distinct than would have been possible in the auditorium where it was delivered. xmerica heard the charge of a President who has had almost as much to contend with as did President Lincoln during the war, ahd has received almost as much abuse from a fightIn Lincoln's days ing minority. as well as these it was a ruinous opposition. Democrats have branded that speech as a "defense" argument Picture his charges against the democratic majority in the lower house of congress under leadership of the man who now is the democratic candidate for vice president. Had their program passed it would have meant the end of recovery, and if it ever passes it will end hope for recovery, according to the President. He referred to the Garner bill which has been termed a "pork barrel" measure, appropriating $1,200,000,000 for non productive and unnecessary works at the expense of the taxpayers. He charged that Garner and the democratic majority championed the cash bonus bill which provided for the issuance of fiat money in the amount of $2,300,000,000. He charged the democrats with bill, creatpassing a price-fixin- g ing what he termed as the "rubber dollar." He charged they passed other measures with this same reckless disregard for the safety of the na tion. in his statement mat "every thinking citizen knows that the farmer, the worker and the business man are in the same boat and Civil must all come to shore together," he brought home a truth which has not been realized by all. He stated that the prosperity of the farmer means the prosperity of the nation. He praised the tariff bill which was passed one year after the depression had taken a firm hold as affording protection to the farmer, as 90 per cent of the farmers' market is in the United States, and announcing his opposition to cancelaltion of the war debt payments to aid of agriculture. He pledged to work for repeal of the farm board stabilization powers, promised to support a greater tariff protection on agricultural products when necessary, advanced new plans for easing the burden of farm mortgages, and described his battle to save the gold standard last winter. Many of these battles, he said, have had to be fought in silence, without the cheers of the limelight or the encouragement of public suport because the very disclosure of the forces opposed to it would have undermined the courage of the weak and Induced pan- - Hideous misrepresentations and unjustified complaint had to be accepted in silence. Referring to the democratic opposition, he remarked: "It is by their acts in congress and their leadership that you shall know them." If this be "defense" we must make the best of it. His reception in Iowa could not have been more patriotic. His route from Davenport to Des Moines was a succession of forced stops, with cheering crowds jamming the tracks, forcing his train to slow speed. This is in contrast to the warning which had gone out that Iowa was against him and that he would find the farmers hostile. His speech was interby overrupted continuously whelming applause. As a result of this speech, new spirit has thrust itself into the campaign and will result in making inactive republicans campaigners until the general election is a thing of the past. They understand fully now many issues that have been unclear in the past, and understand that President Hoover has had much to contend with in battling a radical class that will admit they can see no good in the acts of the present government. ic. Improve National School Grounds About 15 men have been busy for the past two weeks filling in a large wash in the school grounds at National, about 18 miies west of Helper on the Gordon creek road, and generally improving it. The work Is being done under the federal relief funds and it is expected will be completed this week.
