Country papers stand in the front line of defense against schemes that rob the people. They work to encourage industries end payrolls, build up small communi ties and make more business for everybody. According to N. W. Ayer & for Son's Newspaper directory 1930, 9,261 daily and weekly newspapers in towns of 25,000 and under, report 18,383,736 sublists scribers. As the directory over 12.500 of these papers in the 48 states, it la evident that at a most conservative estimate for those not giving circulation figures the rural press must have in excess of 20,000,000 subscrlb ers. Practically none of this subscription list is duplicated; it is seldom that the same person takes two country newspapers. Any way it can be figured, these reach 20,000,000 subscriptions many more than that number of readers, for these is at least a man and a woman in nearly every home where a paper is delivered. It is a great mistake to overlook or exclude the country newspaper in general advertising The Manufacturer campaigns. and Industrial News bureau believes that these newspapers reach a greater potential buying market In a more direct manner than probably any other medium. advertisers national When contemplate the expenditure of money for general advertising, it would be in the interest of the distribution of most uniform products and business to divide so advertising appropriations that a fair portion of them would be used in the country press. The small publishers ad vocate policies which tend to maintain sound conditions in this country but, too often, when there Is any business to be passed around by large industries, it goes only to the big fellows in the publishing business. In its contact with industrial leaders The Manufacturer and Industrial News bureau has al ways preached the advertising value of the smaller city dailies and country weeklies, believing that they are entitled to a share of the advertising appropriations made by large Industries. It has pointed out that an advertisement in the home town paper presents the merits of a productof to the intimate fireside circle the home. It emphasizes the fact that a newspaper in a small community is as necessary to the life of that community as the school or the bank. There is no means of reaching home owners and buyers with a description of the merits of a product or servcolice as directly through the umns of the local paper, which Mr. and Mrs. Ray Herring of Kenilworth visited the past week at the homes of relatives in Ferron. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith have announced the birth of a son at their home on ' January 6th.
