Show BIG "KILL" IN "SPUD" DRIVE As a result of the "sparrow" contest con-test which was inaugurated by the county farm bureau and participated in by the members of the "Ag." club of the Gunnison High school, nearly 5,000 'of the pests were slaughtered by the contestants. The drive was started early in February, but on account ac-count of the outbreak of the influenza, influ-enza, awards wore not made until last Friday evening when a dance and special entertainment was given to the boys who were in the contest. The actual number of birds killed and exhibited was 2.4S4. But it if estimated that from 30 to 50 per cent were lost and could not be found. Or. the basis figured by the government each bird killed means a value in saving sav-ing of 25 cents. According to the number of birds turned in by the contestants con-testants this section has benefited b a saving of $621, and should the en-lire en-lire number" poisoned be paid for accordingly, ac-cordingly, the saving would run close to $1200. The prizes awarded to the contestants contest-ants were as follows: Thomas Mad-sen, Mad-sen, first prize of $3, with 44 4 sparrows; spar-rows; Aaron Jensen, second prize of $2, with 388 sparrows; Levar Wilson, Wil-son, third prize of $1, with 295 sparrows. |
