Show Telephone users encouraged to begin using new 435 area code "Make changes on stationery cards company lists speed dialers " Beginning September 21 callers could use the new “435” area code when placing calls to areas in Utah outside the Wasatch Front and Morgan County However mandatory use of the new area code will not begin until March 22 of next year Utah is running out of prefixes in the 80 area code because of dramatic growth and the demand for new telephone numbers used for such services as fax machines pagers cellular telephones second telephone lines voice mail and computer modems On Sunday Utah's “80 " area code split into two area codes: 435 and 80 transition period During a from September 21 1997 through March 2 998 callers will be able to use either the new 435 area code or the old 801 area code to complete calls On March 22 1998 use of the new area code becomes mandatory With few exceptions customers in a area including Weber Morgan Davis Salt Lake and Utah counties will keep the 801 area code The remainder of the state will change to the new 435 area code Customers can check prefix lists to verify the area code for particular telephone numbers Over the next six months prefix lists and other information about the addition of the new area code will be included with many customer bills Updated information is also available on the Internet at: http: wwwuswestcomcom In addition an customerservicecodes informative advertising campaign is planned for the weeks leading up to the March 22 1998 mandatory dialing date Items that will not change due to the new area code include: local calling teleareas customers’ phone numbers emergency calls to 91 calls to 500 700 800 888 900 and 950 numbers and directory assistance Residential customers who will have the new area code are advised to notify people who call them and make plans to change the area code on such things as personal stationery and checks prior to the March 22 1998 mandatory dialing date Customers will also need to reprogram any automatic dial or speed dial numbers to the new area code In addition customers should notify any alarm monitoring companies of the new area code Business customers who will have the new area code should plan to change phone numbers on such things as stationery business cards labels promotional signs advertisements items brochures and catalogs before March 22 1998 Also prior to March 22 998 businesses must verify their telephone equipment is able to reach the new 435 area code Businesses that use specialized communications equipment (often called PBX equipment) electronic systems or telephone sets key systems may need to reprogram or upgrade the equipment Unlike the format used in the past new area codes being assigned across the country may not have a “0” or a “1” as the middle digit As a result these new area codes (like Utah’s435) may not be recognizable by some business telephone equipment until the equipment has been reprogrammed or upgraded businesses Beginn ing September?
