is currently involved in an Accelerated Student Achievement Project (AS AP) Which means teaching basics the best and fastest possible way available The basics include reading math reasoning and writing The program implemented for this project is Direct Instruction Direct Instruction is designed to teach a lesson or more per day on each subject Every student started this school year at about the same lesson that they finishedWith last May In some cases they started a few lessons back in order to review and firm up the information The main idea to Direct Instruction is to give the answer to a question that will be asked then ask the question Now the student has the answer ready for the question the student feels confident and smart Instead of the student spending energy worrying if they have the correct answer they know the correct answer and are ready to go on (with ease of mind) to learn the next answer and question This method eliminates confusion and the student is excited to press forward Some educators contend that Direct Instruction does not challenge students Other educators insist that the challenge is there just in a different strategy with more information and less guessing Another aspect of DI is that students and teachers know what to expect The rules are always the same This creates less stress Every one can predict for the most part the academic section of a school day Pacing is an important aspect of Direct Instructioa A consistent pace keeps the students up and ready to answer which eliminates time for problems to etc The students develop ie hitting a fellow student talking daydreaming are filled with information at a speed they can keep up with but at the same time are challenged As a result of direct instruction the confidence in each student progresses at a steady incline Each lesson presented consists of already mastered information that the students know extremely well A little more information is added then a little more Think of house being built It will help you picture how direct instruction works First a foundation is built It has to be solid and sturdy to hold up the Now you build on more that also has to be solid and rest of the house Now add another level Only if the foundation and levels below are sturdy solid and sturdy will the house remain sound That is how direct instruction works It builds on solid and correct information It doesn't add on unless the information is solid and sturdy otherwise at some point it can or will fall Some students who normally have difficulties are soaring to new heights of learning because they have a solid foundation to build on Principal Rodney Anderson said “I believe we are doing a better job at teaching than we ev er have'’ The magazine show 2020 did a documentary on how' direct instruction is founder of doing in the school system 2020 interviewed Zig Engleman direct instruction and even though it was not mentioned part of the Gunnison Mr Anderson has Elementary students and teachers several copies to check out and view if y ou are interested FFA 0a0 students attend Field Day On Oct 17 Gunnison Valley FFA attended the Snow College Field Day The LiveAmy Beck got 1st place high individual in Livestock Judging stock Judging Team took 4th place The participants were Amy Beck Kris Sorensen Jessie Brown and Heidi Beck Shawn Sorensen took 4th place high individual in Dairy Judging out of 202 people and their team got 3rd place over all The Dairy Judging team participants were Shawn Sorensen Brian Sorensen Robert Sorensen and Cesar Gutierrez There were 53 Utah Chapters that attended the Field Day by UHP Trooper Terry Smith As a Field Trooper I remember stopping drivers that w ere all over the road As I talked to the driver I could detect a slight odor of alcohol so I would administer field sobriety tests The driver would do very poorly so I would arrest him for driving under the influence (DUI) I would then transport the driver to the Sheriffs Office for a breath test The legal limit in Utah is 08 blood alcohol The driver would only test content 04 so we would also have to obtain a blood test and have a general drug screen done at the Crime Lab This test is extremely expensive and time consuming The driver would be released however not allowed to drive The driver would also be cited for open container if there was one in the vehicle Back then we didn't know to do other tests to see if the driver was under the influence of drugs A person could smoke marijuana or take medication and then drink a couple of beers and go down the road At that time we didn't have the training to look further Now the DRE program is instigated It is a systematic process based on a complete set of observable signs and symptoms that are known to be reliable indicators of drug impairment As the DRE can identify the drug category the testing is done for the specific drug category not a full drug screen This in turn is quicker and more cost effective In our Section we have two DRE officers The training program is very intense and the certification process takes a minimum of one year They must first attend one month of classroom training Then under the supervision of a training officer they must do 20 field evaluations of imIn these evaluations paired drivers Vote molHIHjDlElEIBlEll they must be able to identify the drug Even after certification category they must send in their evaluations to the program director who in turn checks the officer's evaluation with blood tests to make sure the officer maintains an 80 or better rate of identifying the proper drug category The primary role of the DRE is to supplement the field officer’s investigation on impaired drivers So now when someone takes medication or illegal drugs with or without alcohol the officer can call for DRE to do an evaluation When called in the first thing the DRE will do is rule out any medical problem If category of drugs in in the driver’s system Utah has one of the toughest drugged driving laws in the nation Section what states "In cases not to a violation of Section a person may not operate or be in actual physical control of a motor vehicle within this State if the person has any measurable controlled substance or metabolite of a controlled substance in the person 's amounting Dairy Delightful cooking The Gunnison Elementary lunch ladies law are “any measurable amount Some controlled substances can still be detected in the blood stream 30 days after use This is a very significant law Simply put if you have a small amount of cocaine in your blood you are in violation of the law Also it is important to know that if you do not take your prescribed medication properly and misuse it you can be in violation of this law You will be arrested just as another person for driving under the influence A Bulldog Thank You!
