some are serving life sentences however they arc serving time in prison for crimes that arc Prison not likely to be repeated officials do not like to house these prisoners with the other inmates It’s sort of an award system for being good prisoners” Lay said He added that the housing facility at Lone Peak is full and that another camp is definitely needed If the Gooseberry site is selected it will likely house 40 inmates They will work on fires on the Manti LaSal Dixie Fishlake Forests and on other county and state projects “They are a workforce that is available to almost everyone" Lay added The team is fully equipped and will have supervision and their own transportation “The results of the program over the years has been excellent" Mr Lay said “There have been virtually no problems" Three facilities are being considered for the site and it is not known when the final decision will be made “We have the inmates already in the program and there is no place to house them Something will have to be done soon” Mr Lay emphasized As Forest Engineer Lay will likely be the one to coordinate the facility with the Department of Corrections “I have attended meetings etc from its beginning" he said Mr Lay says there won’t be a fence around the facility or formal guards -
