be seen but one thing is certain: it is already sponsible fora renewed a wareness and concern among consumers Area bulk food retailers have seen a remarkable increase in business “Two years ago we had eight to ten employees in our food store Now we have around 60" said Jason Stevens of Maple Leaf Industries in Ephraim “The Friday before April Conference was the biggest day in the history of the store” Opinions on how much of an impact Y2K will have on food supplies and emergency needs are as varied as the selection of storage items available “We have basically three types of customers” said Lloyd Stevens also of Maple Leaf “The first group is made up of people who always have and probably always will shop to maintain a rotating and in use food supply This group is made up of our best customers” said Lloyd “They’re long term and sensible customers" The second group seems to be bordering on panic some of them selling their homes in order to buy thousands of dollars worth of supplies and bringing in large trailers to haul away their purchases The third group of customers is “our distribution network” said Jason “Most of our sales go to distributors east of the Mississippi” Jerry Mower of Pioneer Provisions in Manti said the same is true of his business “Ninety percent of our business is mail order” he said “Most of it goes to the East Coast” According to Mower people n the larger melropol areas are more dependant on public utilities than rural populations Computers play a more important part in their lives and they “can see Y2K really happening” Stevens agrees “They’ve experienced hurricanes and ice storms that have caused major power outages and the panic that often results” In spite of the increase in food storage sales retai lers say there is not now aproblem with availability Dale Nelson with Associated Food Stores’ Manti Grocery said the Associated has completely redone their computer system in the last year In a recent meeting Nelson was told “If we can keep people from panicking the food supply will be uninterrupted” "If some of our suppliers have computer problems we can do the paperwork by hand” Nelson said “In the worst case there might be a day or two delay on some items” Nelson advises that consumers be prepared for something similar to the type of inconvenience caused by a major storm that could slow down truck transportation but doesn’t anticipate any problems with normal supplies On the bulk food level Stevens said there have been some packaging and distribution problems “Suppliers didn’t anticipate creased interest" Y2K causes shortages or not food storage makes good sense "There’s a list 100 miles long of why you should have food in your basement and not one reason not to” said Stevens “It's more practical than people make it out to be” He advises that if you’re considering food storage start now Learn how to use it rotate storage items and be sure to buy Third gain a know ledge of the product He said you need to know the nutritional values shelf life proper storage methods and how to use the product The last step he said “is to go and buy the prixJuct" By following these four steps he believes you'll have a better idea of what you'll need todoto be prepared for whatever you might have to deal with With decades of food storage experience both Maple Leaf Industries and Pioneer Pros isions are a wealth of formation for those with foixl storage “psychological things” "Being in a situation w here you need to use your storage be it loss of job major medical bills or some kind of catastrophe puts you under enough stress Having to eat w heat soup won't be very appealing” He advises that you store food you're familiar with and questions After all as Mower said “In rural areas we need to be ready to help each other and help others to help them- enjoy eating "And don’t forget the ketchup gravies brownies and other treats” he said “You need to be physically psyand emotionally ready chologically Besides by buying in bulk and teaching yourself how to use it you can cut your grocery bill by $ (X) a month" “To some people food storage is a dirty word” said Mower He prefers teaching his customers the four levels selves" give you a purpose to live and a purpose to prepare” Second he says to have Know yourself know that you are worth living and can overcome problems facility The management ol Cox
