Karen Hansen receives Golden Apple Award The Arch Coal Foundation awarded eleven Central Utah teachers with Golden Apple Achiever certificates on Tuesday. Mrs. Karen Hansen of Centerfield, who teaches 6th grade math and geography at Gunnison Valley Middle School was awarded with one of the certificates. According to Wess Sorensen, general manager of the Skyline Mine, the recipients of the Golden Apple award scored very high marks in the foundation's recently concluded teacher awards program. "Although these teachers did not receive the Arch Coal Teacher Achievement Award this year, the independent panel of judges felt these teachers deserved special recognition," he said. This is the fourth year for the Arch Coal Foundation's teacher recognition program in Carbon, Emery, Sanpete and Sevier counties. The counties surround the Skyline, Dugout Canyon and Sufco mines operated by Canyon Fuel Company, a subsidiary of major U.S. coal producer Arch Coal, Inc. The Arch Coal teacher recognition program is unique in that it asks the public to nominate outstanding teachers and then has teachers serve as judges. The judges for the awards this year were all past recipients of the award, Sorensen explained. "Arch Coal has recognized teachers in the four counties for four years now, and we continue to be impressed with the significant number of talented classroom teachers we have in this region," Sorensen said. "Our youth must compete with students across the globe. This area's classroom teachers are making that possible." GVMS Principal Alan Peterson said, "Mrs. Hansen puts in many long hours of extra work. She is externally dedicated and does her best to make sure that every student Karen Hansen gets a quality education."
