Show Society Thursday, March 12, 2009 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Obituaries Delora Johnsen Simkins Our Beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and widow of Jack Leland Simkins, Delora Johnsen Simkins, age 82 passed away of natural causes March 4, 2009 at her daughters home in Landcaster, Ca. Delora was born April 13, 1926 in Pioche, Nevada to Carl and Anne Johnsen. She was raised in St George, Ut. by her grandmother Annie Carter Johnsen. She attended and graduated from Dixie High School in 1944. Delora married Jack Leland Simkins on June 1, 1948 in St George, Ut. They were later sealed in the St George Temple December 1964. They made there home in St George, and spent there summers in Barcley Nevada on the ranch they owned and operated. Later they moved to Panaca, Nevada and lived there for 13 yrs. In 1969 they sold the ranch and moved to Centerfield, Ut. Jack and Delora had three children. She was a devoted wife and loving mother. Delora was a wonderful homemaker where she spent many hours to provide a loving and beautiful home for her family. She was a great cook and enjoyed gathering family at her home for excellent meals. She worked as a nursing aide at the Gunnison Valley Hospital for many years. She also worked as an aide at the Gunnison Valley High School, helping struggling readers. Delora was a great neighbor and friend who reached out to help someone in need. Delora was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in Stake and Ward Relief Society Presidencies. She served a full time mission to the Dallas, Texas mission from 1986-1987. She also served as a temple worker at the St. George Temple. Being the Great Grand Daughter of William Carter (known as the first plow man of Utah) she was a life long member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and served in many capacities through the years. Delora is survived by her children, Douglas Jack and Sue Simkins Price, Ut.; Carol and Ralph Knapp Landcaster, Ca.; and Willard Carl Simkins Springville, Ut. 19 grandchildren and 19 great-grand children. Brothers Leonard Hazelton, Jerry Matherly, and Carl Deloy Johnsen a twin. Funeral Services will be held Sat March 14, 2009 in the Centerfield ward chapel, Centerfield Utah. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. with the services to follow at 11:30. Interment will be at the Centerfield City Cemetery. Birthday Merlene Bartholomew Merlene Chapman Bartholomew, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother passed away March 10, 2008 in Gunnison, Utah. Born in Sterling, Utah to Ray and Verl D. Christensen Chapman on April 19, 1924. Merlene graduated from Manti High School and married her sweetheart Shirley J. Bartholomew on November 25, 1942 for time and all eternity in the Manti Temple. Her beloved husband passed away December 13, 1965 after only 23 years of marriage. In the absence of her husband, Shirley, Mom created a wonderful family environment to finish raising her young family. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life. She created a home of love, laughter, and caring and where we all wanted to be. Above all else, Mom was a tremendous spiritual support to our family, sharing with us her strong testimony of Jesus Christ. She consistently exemplified a Christ-like life to us and to others. She was fully involved in her responsibilities in the LDS Church, gladly serving in the Young Women’s, Primary and Relief Society programs. Mom had a talent of writing poetry and we looked forward to being the recipient of her poem written especially for Millie Hammond us. Survived by her children, Eugene (Sheila) Bartholomew, Bruce (Arlene) Bartholomew, Sherry (Steve) Anderson, Kendall (Catherine), all of Mayfield; 15 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren. Presided in death by her husband; parents; brother, Earl Chapman and sister Lucille Peterson. Funeral Services will be held Friday, March 13, at 12 Noon in the Mayfield LDS Chapel. Friends may call at the church Thursday evening 6:00 to 8:00 pm and again Friday from 10:30 am to 11:30 am prior to services. Burial will be in the Manti City Cemetery. Marks 1935 - 2009 Tucson, AZ - Paul Edward Marks SSgt ret. USAF, age 74, of Arizona City, Arizona, passed away Tuesday February 24, 2009 at the VA Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona. He was born on July 7, 1935 in Scranton, PA, a son of Paul Peter and Tessie Theresa Abramczik Mazurkiewicz. Paul will be remembered for his “happy-go-lucky” personality and his wonderful sense of humor. He has always had a sense of integrity, honor and responsibility in everything with which he did in life. Paul retired with the United States Air Force after 21 years of active duty, during which time he proudly served his country during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Paul is survived by his wife Beverly Ellen Marks, of Arizona City, Arizona and two sons CMSgt ret. Paul Edward and Haeng Hwa Marks of Tampa, Florida; and Steven Phillip and Millie Marks of St. George, Utah; 5 grandchildren; Delivery in 6 to 8 weeks! Missionary Elder Jeremy S. Rosenvall Elder Jeremy Rosenvall has reluctantly returned home from serving in the Louisiana Baton Rouge Mission after an honorable release on February 19th, 2009. He has reported to the Gunnison 2nd Ward and the Gunnison 3rd Ward. Jeremy is the son of Greg and Marcia Rosenvall. He is the son of Clyde and Jean Rosenvall, and Richard and the late Ana Brunner. Thank You! The family of Tyson J. “Ty” Whitaker would like to tell everyone in our great valley thank you. It was amazing to see how well the valley came together and supported us during this tragedy. We would like to thank the Gunnison EMT’s, the Fire Department and the law enforcement officers for their help at the scene. We would also like to thank Dr. Judy, the nurses and all of the other hospital staff at Gunnison Valley Hospital. A big thanks to Magelby Mortuary for helping us through this tough time and making sure every detail was right. Thanks to Gunnison 3rd Ward, Centerfield 1st Ward and Mayfield ward for all of their compassionate services and food. Thanks also to the bishops of those wards. A special thanks to Michelle’s co-workers at Walkers and all of her and Tyson’s friends. They were so kind during this time and did a wonderful job setting up the candle light ceremony and fund-raiser BBQ and auction. They were all a great success. The family again wishes to express our thanks to all of you for caring so much about Tyson and his family. It makes all of us want to do better to love one another. one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his youngest son Bruce Allen Marks.
