Cubs Get Down With Derby by CHRISTI GARFF Cub Scouts from Centerfield 1st Ward, Centerfield 2nd Ward and Axtel met for their 2007 pinewood derby Thursday January 25th in Centerfield. You could feel the enthusiasm as the boys and their fathers began to arrive in the pits for the weigh in. Pinewood derby cars must be no more than 5oz. in weight. Cars of all shapes, colors and sizes could be found. It is amazing what a boy and his father can design from a small block of wood. This year the Cub Scout boys were treated to an amazing new race track custom built by Brian Hamblin of Centerfield. Races began right on time with the Wolves racing first. Nine boys would compete for the coveted top three places. Finishing in 3rd place was Karston Crane, 2nd place was awarded to Brayden Nelson and Joshua Gill finished in 1st place for the Wolves. The next boys to race were the Bears. Top three honors went to Seth Bown 3rd place, Trey Clark, 2nd place and Chris Shober finished with top honors. Finally the Webelos wound up the evening of races with Jean Buckland finishing 3rd, Layne Hamblin finished in 2nd place, and the champion for the Webelos was Nathan Peterson. Every competitor was awarded a ribbon and participation certificate for their hard work with medals going to the top three boys in each division. Thanks to all of the leaders who made the night possible and congratulations to all the boys and their families for an evening of good sportsmanship and fun. Last February, about seventy employees weighed in. The contest would go until January of this year. The contestants received literature on healthy weight loss and had a supervised weigh in every two weeks. In order to qualify as a winner, the contestants had to lose at least 10% of their body mass. Prizes were available for six winners but only five achieved the minimum 10% loss. The biggest loser was Venna Gardner who lost 27.1%. She was presented with the grand prize of $1250. She said her weight loss success came from eating healthy and exercise. Dawn Cook came in second place losing 17.8% and winning $500. Third place was Shara Peterson with a 17.4% loss and a $500 gain. Cindy Mulder came in fourth place losing 17.1% and Kamis Mullen lost 12.6% putting her in fifth place. They each won $375.
