The awards came as a surprise to both teachers. Elizabeth Jensen won a $2500 grant for her proposal, ‘Mapping Our Past for the Future’. Her grant money will be used to map historical sites around Gunnison using a GPS system. The children will then be able to use GPS activities to find these sites. Jensen told the students, “It will be like a treasure hunt.” Robyn Hendrickson won a $2500 grant for her proposal, ‘The Language of Success’. This grant money will be used to buy software that helps Spanish speaking students learn English. This will help these students better adapt and open the way for greater educational opportunities. The Qwest Foundation and the Utah State Office of Education received 117 proposals this year. Of those proposals, 21 winners were chosen from across the state. According to Gary Younger from Qwest, this is the first time that two teachers from the same school and district have received a grant in the same year. “This is a great honor for Gunnison Valley Elemen- tary” Younger said. The Qwest Teachers and Technology Grant Program is designed to recognize and reward public school teachers who use innovative technology in the classroom to improve the education experience for students. Qwest provided a $900,000 donation that helps fund innovative technology grants so that individual teachers in 14 western states can improve education in the classroom. “These teachers are doing a wonderful job helping students become familiar with technology,” said Jerry Fenn, Qwest president for Utah. “My hat is off to educators who think outside the box and help make technology relevant and exciting.” “Teacher use of technology in the classroom is essential not only for keeping Utah’s students up to date but in reaching our new technology—savvy students,” said Utah State Superintendent of Public Instruction Patti Herrington. “We thank our partners at Qwest for helping us recognize teachers who make good use of classroom technology.” Congratulations and thanks go out to Elizabeth Jensen and Robyn Hendrickson for these grants and for their continuing efforts to better educate the children of Gunnison Valley. Linda Campbell, who usually accompanies the group on the piano, was also able to sing with the girls. Last Wednesday night, Action Video Plus on Main Street in Gunnison, was broken into and had cash, movies and video games stolen. Store owners, Mardy and Karen Jensen, report that $85 in cash was taken from the till. There were also 218 video games stolen. The games were for X-Box, Game Cube and Play Station gaming sys- tems. The thief’s also took the time to select thirty videos from off the shelves, look them up in the files and then steal them. According to Mardy Jensen, there was a similar break in four months ago in which the thief got away with $200 in cash.
