LINDA MILLER If you, or someone you know is planning on attending college next year, now is the time to start making final preparations. No matter who you are, or what your income if you are planning to attend college you should apply for financial aid. Start by going to www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov. This website helps you predict what you can get in Federal Financial Aid. Remember, it is a predictor not an application. FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The federal government uses this form to determine you eligibility for financial aid, which includes: grants, work-study, scholarships and loans. The FAFSA form is used to determine how much aid you are eligible to receive. The FAFSA process is three steps to apply for federal aid. 1. Assemble forms needed to complete FAFSA. These include social security number, driver license and income taxes records for both you and your parents. 2. Complete the FAFSA on the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov. In order to maximize your amount of aid, fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1st. Once finished, print the FAFSA summary as well as the “Submission Confirmation” page. 3. Review you Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR is proof that your FAFSA was received. You should receive you electronic SAR in 1-3 days compared 2-3 weeks if you submit a paper form. You will need a Personal Identification Number (PIN).The PIN is the code that the U.S. Department of Education uses to identify you online. To obtain a PIN, eligible students and Parents can visit www.pin.ed.gov (Students and parents can each receive their own PINs). Click on “Apply for Pin” near the top of the page. Allow for 4 hours for PIN instructions to be sent via e-mail. The PIN allows you to do the following on a FAFSA: 1. Check the status, 2. Make corrections, 3. Fill out an online renewal form next year, and 4. Electronically sign to speed up the process. If you need help or have questions about this process, please contact the counseling office at the high school.
