The Gunnison Stake held a Pinewood Derby last Wednesday evening. Anyone that wanted to participate was invited to do so. It was a huge success! There were 94 entrees and it was obvious the kids and adults put a lot of work into their cars. Katie Montague was the fastest of the bunch but all the cars ran great. Jaron Jensen was a very entertaining conductor and the evening was fun for everyone in the very large crowd. Valentine’s Day Flowers So you want to fly an airplane, I would suggest you take a few lessons before attempting to do so. Quite a few lessons to be exact. It is the same with gardening, unless you grew up learning from parents just how to do it, you may have trouble starting out. I have had students in my gardening classes who would plant seeds in the spring and then come back in the fall to harvest their crop. What is usually found is a crop of weeds, which by the way do pretty good on their own without human help and a little moisture from the sky. We who have a garden, know that we all can have problems, too much water, not enough water, freezing, drought and other weather connected items, like wind. I made a big mistake this year, after a late start our garden started producing and in the end turned out pretty good, but I neglected to nip the weeds in the bud, when I should have and let some go to seed. Not only did I have a problem digging them out, (the roots had headed for the center of the earth) but scattered around on the ground where thousands of seeds. I will have to deal with them this spring. Weed seeds seem to sprout a lot easier than the ones we want to sprout. Winter time is a good time to sit down and plan your garden. The weather outside is frightful and the fire is so delightful. You will not have a lot of spare time in the spring so get at it now. Plan on growing the things you like and that your family will enjoy. A lot of pumpkins may make you garden look good but they take up a lot of space and you can not use a lot of them. Most people enjoy tomatoes, so that should be on your menu. There are vegetables that can be stored, like potatoes and carrots but unless you know what you are doing may not always turn out. Most people enjoy corn on the cob, so that may be something you would like to Now Playing At The Casino Star Theatre Get Your Orders in Early! -ROSESDozen Roses in a Vase - $39.99 1/2 Dozen Roses in a Vase - $21.99 3 Roses in a Vase - $14.99 Single Rose in a Vase - $7.99 -CARNATIONS3 Carnations in a Vase - $7.99 Single Carnation in a Vase - $5.99 Sweetheart Bouquet - $24.99 Playing February 9th through February 15th Rated PG-13 (CARNATIONS AND OTHER FRESH CUT FLOWERS IN A CRYSTAL DISH) DELIVERY CHARGE - $5 Ticket Prices $5.00 - Adults Mon-Thurs = 7 pm nightly $3.50 - Children under 12 Fri & Sat = 7 pm & 9 pm & Senior Citizens Tuesday Night is Bargain Night! A - D Credit plant, although it also may take up a lot of space. Speaking of space, that is something I would like to discuss next. Coming out of Salt Lake City, as you come around the point of the mountain and enter Utah Valley, off to the right side of the road, you see a housing development. It is just north of Thanksgiving Point and it looks like the houses are sitting on top of each other. I would like to drive down into that community and see how much space they might have for a garden. Regardless of the space you have, there are things that you can do to make the most of the room you have. One way is to plant those plants that can climb up a wall, pole or fence. Another method is to use what is called square foot gardening. An author whose name is Mel Bartholomew, has written books on the subject. Using a grow box or raised bed, you section it off into foot squares which you can then divide into small sections depending on what you are planting. Some plants like a cabbage or tomato would take up a whole square or more. Radishes on the other hand, would have many to a square. Our gardening in the old method of planting plats in a single row got started because of the use of horses or tractor to cultivate, which makes sense. But in our gardens, this is a waste of space. Many more plants can be grown if put close together. One more thing that I would like to mention, all plants require three things; sun, water, a growing medium, and of course, food. Some plants require much more sun then others, so if you are growing these types, you need to have your growing area in a sunny spot. Some plants will do better with some shade.
