They seized and burned a small sailing vessel and Imprisoned the captain and disappeared to the northwest. They were evidently returned to Vladivostok. There is a possibility that they have destroyed other small craft, although no reports to that effect have been received. The object of their visit is not clear. It is thought that probably Tokio. they hoped to torpedo tho Japanese patrol at night, and it is also suggested that the Vladivostok vessels plan a diversion to assist the licet of Admiral Rojestvensky. Although none have been sighted, it is believed that the larger vessels of the Vladivostok squadron accompanied the torpedo boats which appeared west of Hokkaido. It is doubted t hat torpedo boats would venture across unescorted-ithe heavy sea which was running when they burned n the sailing vessel. CLEARING UP A MURDER MYSTERY Colorado Springs, Colo. Mrs. Meda Kempter, wife of Richard Kempter of Syracuse, N. Y., has identified the remains of the Cutler mountain victim as that of her daughter, Mrs. Bessie Bouton, and left late Sunday night with the remains for New York. The identification was made complete by the dental work upon the teeth and by a scar upon the right side of the left fore finger as well as by the hair. The mother charged that Milton Franklin Andrews attempted to murder the girl by poison while on the Pacific coast, and this convinces the police that if they can capture Andrews they will be able to establish a murder charge acainst him. Death was caused bullet being fired into by a the head. Every article of clothing was removed by the murderer and the body placed across the stump of a tree, face downward. In the effort to prevent recognition of the body, the murderer poured gasoline upon the befly and built a fire under the face. But the extensive dental work upon the teeth was not destroyed, and it was this work which has led to the identification of the victim. Man a Late Comer. Seventy-fivmillion years is an estimate of the age of fishes; 25,000,000 years ago the huge amphibia flourished. The dinosaur lived probably 15,000,000 years ago, and about 10,000,-00cr e 0 jears later the primitive horse ap- peared; and still no evidence of man. So it will be seen that man is a late comer on the earth, when looked at in the light of geologic time. He left a written istatoment to bo made public, in tbo course of which he reiterated his denial of the crime. The dead body of Ward, Metzgers victim, was found partly burned in the bed of his cabin where he lived alone. A bullet hole in the head showed the manner of death. The murderer had evidently tried to cover up the crime by invoking the aid of fire. The bed clothing had been saturated with kerosene and set fire, but the flames failed to do their part. ;Ward had evidently been shot through jthe window as he was eating his dinner. One of his farm buildings was lalso burned. Robbery was evidently the motive, as some of Wards effects were found in Metzgers possession when he was arrested several weeks after the discovery of the crime. Metz-- ' jger was only 29 years old, and is said to belong to a good family living in Peirce, near Akron, O. He did Everything possible to keep his family from the news of his conviction, often saying he did not care so much about dying as he did the result upon his relatives. Metzgers neck was not broken, death resulting from strangulation, and he was pronounced dead in eleven and a half minutes. i e, td crippling or destroying Ntbo patofTs ships before they could effect Junction with those of Rojestvensky nnd there is reason to believe that tho Japanese took up a position in tho ytraits of Sunda. through which Ncbo gatoff originally intended to make tho passago into the China sea.
