Show 01 old landmark A waterwheel reputed to be the largest in the U S is still in use a few miles north of green river utah it was constructed and put in use sometime in the 1880 s according to howard hast ings whose farm home is just be side it this famous old landmark was originally built with a diameter of 22 feet but it was enlarged to 28 feet in 1940 by mr hast ings and his son H L hastings for thirty years the hastings have lived on the land irrigated by th the e old wheel and it is still in daily operation irrigating with wat er wheels may be slow but it is also inex pensive dependable and trouble free mr hastings said that the wheel is capable of irrigating acres of land but at present he is using it to irrigate only about 70 acres he also has a thriving kitchen garden by the house which owes its existence to the water wheel mr hastings lush farm is re buted to be some of the best agn agri cultural land in the green river valley at present the main crops are corn and hay the waterwheel is located be low the dam either the dam or the wheel is worth a visit but both can be seen at the same time T 4 f 03 4 L 4 this famous landmark situated about four miles north of green river utah has been in operation for nearly 75 years here it is shown cascading its precious water into the irrigation trough thus starting it on its life giving journey into the fields green river journal photo by polaroid camera |
