With Commission Chairman David Knutson abstaining from the vote, the commission voted to give a tax break to a natural gas company planning on hiring Knutson. Lee Robinson of Valley Operating Company had come to the county last month, asking for reduction in past property tax. Robinson said his company had taken over the wells in the Cisco Dome area from a company that went bankrupt, and later discovered taxes were owed. According to Grand County Attorney Lyle Anderson, about $87,000 was owed in past tax. According to the county treasurer's office, an additional $15,000 was owed in interest and late fees. "This guy said what they do with the property depends very much on what we do with the taxes," said Anderson. "They think there's real make the wells that exist more productive and to drill new wells." "I have a conflict of interest in this," said Knutson. "Those arc properties that I have worked on in the past, and because I did most of the work out there, he's contacted our company, my dad and I, to maybe go out to work." Despite the conflict, Knutson says he participated in the negotiations with Robinson, along with Anderson, Treasurer Grace Eastin, and Clerk Fran Townsend. Those negotiations resulted in a proposal to cancel past due penalties and interest for over $15,000, allowing Valley Operating up to 15 years to pay off the outstanding taxes, and charge Valley Operating an interest rate below the county's regular practice. If the gas field proves productive, the back tax repayment would lake place within a much shorter time span. Attorney Anderson said he had mixed feelings about giving live tax break. choice of ingredients. One perspective on treating disease comes in the form of hydrotherapy, herbal remedies, and massage. The cost of the program would be 50 centers per phone line per month within the county. That money, an estimated $1,600 per month, would be banked by the county, which would pay GTE phone company about $1,500 per month for the service. Last year the Commission allocated $20,000 to the Grand County Special Service Recreation District, and Equestrian Board bills were supposed to be paid with that money. However, the Equestrian Board overspent its budget by about $1,900, and the Rec Board covered those extra bills out of its regular funds. Now, the Rec Board wants to have that money repaid to them. Perhaps part of the answer may come in this quote from the pen of E.G. White, "Disease is an effort of nature to free the system from conditions that result from a violation of the laws of health. Sometimes it may be like sprinkling baking soda on your cake after it is already baked, when the flatness cannot be corrected. It is in the mix of every day life that we make our "I think there's good reason to be uneasy about making any deal at all," said Anderson. "You dont know how many additional people you're going to find hoping they can make the same kind of deal and trying to get you to make that kind o! a deal. And possibly not paying their taxes on time so they can get that kind of a deal." But commissioners Manuel Torres and Sam Cunningham voted to approve the deal, but charged the goine county interest rale. Purchasing a Loader In other business, the Commission gave approval to a plan to spend $155,000 for a loader for the road department. "The reason 1 want it is to handle bigger rock slides," said road department supervisor David Warner, "and when we have washouts we have to take care of." The loader, a used model, is about $50,000 more than a new loader one size smaller. "That would be fine with me upon the ability to work it out in the budget," said Knutson.
