Show HEAVY GRADES. To show how easily men can be deceived about grades, there is a rise of 225 feet between the wells above Liberty park and the reservoir at the head of First South street. Men do not think of that when driving horses up street, only the automo biles give notice that it is a climb. From those figures the men who drive delivery wagons can find a reason why their horses are knocked out here faster than in level cities. But the wells are sixty feet higher than the railroad depots. So from the reservoir to the depots there is a fall of very close upon 300 feet. Owners of automobiles automo-biles who are sometimes disappointed with the working of their machines should keep in mind that when they go up one of the streets of this city they are climbing a 100-foot grade per mile, I which reduces the hauling capacity of a locomotive locomo-tive 86.8 per cent. |
