Show Many are the tales, more or less authentic, passed down among the students regarding the faculty of Wellesley college. One of the most popular of these concerned Fraulein Margaretha Mitzlaff, formerly of the German department. When Fraulein Mitzlaff first came to this country, although she had an unusually fluent command of the English language, it was chiefly derived from her study of Shakespeare. Accordingly, Accord-ingly, when she wished to stop a street car in Boston, she addressed the astonished conductor thus: "Prithee, kind sir, cause the vehicle to cease, that I may alight and go hence." Two years ago, when Ben Greet's company was giving a revival of old English plays in Boston, Professor Katherine Lee Bates of Welles-ley Welles-ley college succeeded in arranging with Mr. Greet for the presentation of "The Sad Shepherd," a play written by Ben Jonson, a contemporary of Shakespeare, at Wellesey. To her astonishment and the amusement of the whol college, one of the Boston papers announced an-nounced the event in this manner: "Tomorrow, on the Wellesley grounds, Ben Jonson will present pre-sent his play of the 'Sad Shepherd.' It is understood under-stood that it is through Miss Bates of the literature litera-ture department that Wellesley has the rare fortune for-tune of securing Mr. Jonson." |
