Show Golf. The men's third preliminary handicap play for the handicap cup qualification, which takes place today, and the women's handicap cup qualification play next Wednesday are the only events scheduled until next Saturday, when approaching and putting and driving contests take place. There ought to be some fun in the latter especially. At least half a dozen of the men players are driving wilu beautiful regularity regul-arity for distances generally exceeding 170 yards, often close to 200. A drive of 185 yards up the hill to the fourth hole ought to come close to winning, however. There's very little to a drive thero but the carry. May the gods inject some ginger into the men taking tak-ing care of the lawn, and have them cut the grass close before the approaching and putting contest. At present it is almost like trying to kick a football through a blanket to approach the home green. As an example: three of the best players were within, at the farthest, fifteen yards of the homo green last Saturday on their second shots. Two of them holed out in six, the third in seven. It is simply impossible to gauge the strength necessary nec-essary for a short approach witn the grass injts present condition. But while I am talking of approach shots . Travis the amateur champion, in the finals for the Metropolitan cup over the Tuxedo course last Saturday, Sat-urday, went ont in 38 and in in 38 ,a total of 70. Bogey is 78. Early in the week he negotiated the 18 holes in 72. Now the Tuxedo course is but a little lit-tle over 2,700 yards long for each nine holes, say 500 yards longer than the Country Club course. From a good drive, an iron shot carries the green on nine of the eighteeen holes. A cleek is used for the drive from two tees. What I want to lecture on is this supreme importance im-portance of the approach shot. It is in this shot that Travis excels. It requires more soud practice than any other shot used. On the short Country Club course, there is not a green that cannot be reached with an iron from a fair drive, yet how many players can confidently count on always getting get-ting within reasonable distance of the green on their second shot? Ilero is Travis' score and Bogey for tne first eighteen eigh-teen holes of the finals: Travis 453 4045 338 Bogey 45355844 440 Travis 4540434 4 38 total 70 Bogey 54445435 4 38 total 78. Pretty steady playing, that. J. Gojfsonie, |
