Show GOLF. Where were all the golfers? Not a dozen players went over the course on the opening day, and if it had not been for the women members of the club, who made the club house bright and cheerful, it would have been dismal enough. It was so very cold out on the hills that golfing was perilously near lilce work. But it's the only game. Last year it was two months after the opening open-ing of the season that anyone broke into "A" class. This year, with the necessary medal score set considerably lower, two players qualified on the opening day, Hale and Copp. Two others, McGurrin and Walcott Thompson, played under 85 a week or so ago, and will undoubtedly repeat very soon. The best Thompson could do Saturday Satur-day was 93, but as he previously had covered the 18 holes in 83, it is very evident that only a little lit-tle practice is needed to steady his game to the danger point it is generally set at. Fred Hale's 81, considering the poor condition of the fair greens, and the consequent bad lies, was remarkable remark-able golf. r (C J ,& The course is bad. There is no denying it. The rains have worn gullies all over the course unri the gutta shows an exasperating affinity for the bottom of them. The only redeeming feat urn is the condition of the greens. They are a trifle soft, and therefore very true. It has been suggested sug-gested that it would be a very pious idea i'oi the greens keeper to sprinkle the greens every night this summer. Lose year, when swept by Iho wind, they were simply impossible, and some plan should be adopted to keep them from becoming JjA mere, patches of rough baked adobe. 'fl jifl We are to have two club teams this year, tne j Cleeks and the Brassies. The teams have been il picked by the greens committee, and as fast as fl the members qualify, their names will be posted, I M Red and white, and green and white are the col- M ors, and the scraps between the members of the 11 teams for the honor of heading the lists, and the straight team matches to be arranged, will add 11 much to the pleasure of the season. From this !H also will come a club team, and perhaps team 11 matches with some of the players from other cities. The Ogden club has been re-organized. Can't a team match be arranged with that club fl for a starter. fjl Bogie for the course has been set at 37 this year, a correct figure. Bogie has been reduced one 1 H stroke each on the third and fourth boles. H Instructor Leonard will be here about May 1. fll Ernest Bamberger and Jack Royle are threat- H ening to break into the game this season. Ah, H hah. Has anyone heard John Critchlow chirp? H John missing a two-foot putt would be a picture Worth going miles to see. H A. FOOZLER. H |
