Show B FOR EACH VOTER TO DECIDE. B The Deseret News, noting that all men have i , Hie right of opinion, that free speech and a free H I l press are guaranteed, still wants a clean cam- H t' I palgn, and a consideration of the best men and H best interests of the state. The editorial is iu- H tended for use among the Mormon people only, for B with the News the right of opinion is always and B on all subjects subject to the opinion of the Church H leaders, and with the News its desire is to elimi- H nate party politics from the state. That Is, with H the News, If an apostle and an elder were to be H nominated on each of the tickets, the News' idea H would be that the two apostles ought to be elected. HB f In other words, the News 's simply and merely H a Church organ and its advice is always subject EB to its Church fealty, which dominates all its acts. H Could it have its way, the nominatons of all ofll- Hf cors frm Governor down would be made at B Church headquarters, announced In the Tabernacle IB and the people would be instructed to sustain wHyJ the nominations. B Now In point of, faat nothing could be more de- B ' grading than that, nothing more a perversion of B the theory of free institutions, nothing more con- H trary to the commands of the Constitution, which HB the News affects to revere. H The riglit-ptindivldual opinion in this country B means the right of each individual to espouse HH ,1 any opinion he may please to espouse. B j) Beyond that, the right being given him, it is H , j his bounden duty to exercise that right, and on the HH j certain expectation that all citizens would exer- K p else this right, our Government was left with no (BjjB U protection, short of the sword, except the expres- H 1 sion of these opinions, by the people, through the BB t ballot box Hence the voter, who, without per- JHfl jp sonal thought, accepts without reservation the hBI y opinion of jury man, be he knave or priest, and f casts his vote accordingly, is a dangerous man i under a free Government, for all that is needed is hh f a majority of such voters in a state to reduce its Hm " Government to the level of that of Turkey or the HBB i tribal Governments of the wild Bedouins of the BHffl i b Arabian desert. Because of this rule a hundred HHB mm nations have either perished out and out or have BHB r r sunk from their former splendor to the condition of dependent states, unable to either educate or protect their own people. A state and presidential election is to be held in Utah in November. Every citizen should be able to give himself, at least, a reason why he will vote for either Roosevelt or Parker electors. In the same way, he should have his own opinions of who ought to be elected to the various state offices. He or she should from history be able to estimate what line of policies would best serve the highest interests of the states and nation, and vote accordingly. This cannot be obtained from any church chie'f, for their business, all their lives, has prevented them from studying deeply the poiitical history of this country. It is the work of each individual to decide for himself. It Is the only way that he can perform the highest duties of citizenship. |
