Show ODELL APPEALS TO BISHOPS. If anyone dpes not believe that George T. .Odejl Js soliciting .Mormon Influence in his campaign, cam-paign, let him ask any one of the Mormon bish ops of the thirty-six "epclesiastical wards of the city. Mr. Odell did 'not-appeal to the bishops personally. He addressed each one of them in a letter which is replete with thrilling pathos and entreaty. The letter informs the bishops that he had been advised by President J. Golden Kimball, of the Seventies Quorum, in the presence of Elder El-der Thomas Hull, that a report was in circulation circula-tion that he had made a deal with the sporting fraternity to protect them in case of his election. Mr. Odell announces to the bishops that this report re-port is untrue and that it was circulated by his opponents for the purpose of benefitting the candidacy can-didacy of Mr. W. F. James. He says that neither President Kimball nor Elder Hull believes the report, re-port, although Elder Kimball said he had heard the report in divers places and on numerous occasions oc-casions and that the language in which the report re-port was circulated was unfit for publication. The Perpetual Candidate also advises the bishops that he will give a moral administration, and intimates that any bishop doubting the accuracy ac-curacy of this statement may reasure himself by consulting with either Elder Kimball or Elder Hull upon the subject. The information that such a report had been circulated will be sad news"to the public. Up to that time the worst thing the people in general had heard of him was inelligibility for the office of mayor, his unhappy connection with the Utah Home Telephone company and his intimate relations rela-tions with the Kearns machine. It surely appears that .Mr. Odell, has permitted his supersensitive nature to blur his judgment by taking notice of so small a matter, for how can he expect George Sheets to continue to support him and Bruce Johnson to present him with the Fifty-second district if he is going to cater to the religious element jn the community. It is evident that he was not so much. worried about the report as he was anxious to inform the bishops that he was .still extant in the political world and that he had the support of two distinguished Mormons, as well as that of Bishop Clawson, who acts as official of-ficial messenger in distributing the letters. It may be noted also that the worthy Bishop Clawson has for years cultivated a piercing stage whisper which he always uses when he delivers tips from headquarters, and it is a fact worthy of note that this whisper is utilized in delivering these letters. Among he ecclesiastics to whom the letters were delivered last Thursday were Bishop Iver-son, Iver-son, Bishop Solomon and Bishop Romney. Bishop Robert Morris is reported to have side-stepped the missive and the whisper, and announced that he would support John Clark for mayor, as he would then be sure that the city would receive a moral administration. The bishop stated further fur-ther that he was suspicious of any candidate who had to solicit references from the Elders. |
