erred The Times has been subjected to some little criticism during the past week for its outspoken front page editorial in last week’s issue While the number of critics has been small we feel that our stand should be explained We were outspoken we intend to continue to be so Garland has for years allowed outside interference with its progress and ad- vancement this city has taken theattitude4hat-it-i- s better to be 'walked on than to take a chance of offending others and this city has calmly stood by and watched one business after another be taken away until the statement that was made to the editor but a week ago by a Tremonton business man — “Well we have taken everything away from Garland that we want except possibly the sugar factory and that is too heavy to move’’ —is typical of the AND GARLAND LET ALL THIS feeling found COME TO PASS But Garland has changed Garland wants that and GARLAND INTENDS TO road improvement HAVE IT The Bear River Valley Leader spoke out with a front page editorial (labelled as such) in which and they throw down the gauntlet to all Garland the north end of Box Elder county The arguments used to oppose the road improvement are just about e as weak as might be expected from a newspaper in a community that boasts of forty business houses The “Leader” asks “if the new road were made what percentage of traffic would travel that road?” and proceeds to prophesy that it would be a very small percentage With all due respect to the years of local residence behind our neighboring editor we claim that when it comes to prophesies abilities are just as potent as his our crystal-gazin- g A study of highway traffic charts would refute the statement made in the “Leader” We beg to differ with the interpretation given in the statement that the new road would be joined to the highway by right angle turns That is just what the proposed road would eliminate The present highway makes great use of close and dangerous curves the proposed road would join the highway just below the hospital with long gradual “Y” turns When comparative costs are mentioned the right of way for the new road is already secured and would therefore cost nothing The right of way needed to straighten out Powell’s comer any other way would be costly as was proved some time ago when such an attempt was made by the highway commission The entrance into Tremonton via the new road would be a far better one and more usable than the present one The Times is interested primarily in the elimination of the death curve at Powell’s comer This paper has investigated thoroughly the different poa-sibmethods of eliminating thi dangerous condition and has come to the conclusion that the only logical solution is that suggested in the past month by this paper That the Objections raised by Tremonton people might prevent this much needed improvement we find it hard to believe Human lives are at stake not merely the small town prejudices of a few individuals We fail to believe that those officials in whose hands lies the power to correct this curve Mil allow such narrow prejudice to prevent this improvement And we repeat from last week this road is far more important to the residents of the north end of Box Elder county than to the residents of Tremonton alone We demand the right to travel in safety to points below Tremonton and to Tremonton itself if we have occasion so to do without being forced to round two dangerous curves and if we wish to drive below Tremonton we resent the force being applied to make us go through that city We agree with the editor of the “Leader” that if this road is built and the curve is also otherwise expensively straightened out there would be as much use for the duplication as a dog has for two tails However we believe that the extra appendage on the dog in this case would be the continued use of the present road when the new one is built — as it WILL be It is the primary duty of all newspapers to do' public service The editor of the “Leader” states that that paper had considerable to sav regarding e this curve some time ago IF that KNEW that this curve constituted a death paper and IF that paper KNEW that it should be corrected and IF that paper allowed the project to be dropped and the curve left “as is” — we believe that that paper should hang its head in shame at so acknowledging that it haa so failed to do its public duty as to allow such a thing to come to pass 1933 Number 50 BARGAIN DAYS AT GARLAND TO BE CONTINUED NEXT BIG EVENT SATURDAY JULY 22 EPHR1AM WHITE
