Read It in The Times or Leader VERY MUCH WANTED Josiah Gilbert Holland was an American editor who used his editorial chair as a lay pulpit. Wanted was inspired by a passionate sense of outrage at the crimes of the Twecd-Crokpolitical machine in New yerk. It might have been written for a time like this. Ihirty-iixt- h "The Complete Home Newspaper" Garfield, Utah, Friday, August Year 1, 1952 Number 7 er Residents Asked To Not Follow Fire Trucks Going To Calls WANTED" God give us men! To borrow, or not to borrow? To inflate, or not to inflate? To spend, or not to spend? That is the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind to use my common sense and suffer the slings and arrows of my disgruntled constituents, or to make sure of their votes by trading support with other groups, and thus giving them what they think they want. To vote, to trade; and by trade to get a plum for myself by giving scores of plums to others. What if the grand load is beyond imagination? What if by our legislation we mortgage our children to give ourselves a Roman holiday? Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished. To vote; to trade; to lose; aye; theres the rub; for in the primaries and fall election what things may happen when my vote is beyond recall must give me pause. Thus, expediency dues make cowards of us all. Samuel Butler truth is as comfortable in homely language as in fine speech. A This newspaper, for our great United States, our state, our town and our citizens, will endeavor during the ensuing weeks before the primary and election, to bring TRUTH to our readers. Gosh, it seems rather cruel to lead some of these older politicians on to the race course, when the pasture would be considerably more suitable. Happy Times We received a postcard this week from George and Grace Latham who are having the time of their lives on a three-mont- h vacation in England and near-b- y countries. So glad they could go, for it is such people who arc deserving of trips. Jenks Jenkins TO OUR READERS To Our Readers: Subscription rales of the Magna Ttmos and Garfiold Load-o- r will bo increased, effective September 1. 1152. The increase, first for either newspaper in cloven years, was dictated by the unprecedented rise of production cost since 1941. Newsprint the second largest single cost item in newspiper production, has increased in this period 90. Labor costs, as well as costs of all materials, supplies and equipment distribution, newsgathering also have registered large increases. The Magna Times and Garfield Leader subscription rales have been among the lowest of weekly papers in Utah. Some newspapers have recently announced second and third poet-wa- r rale increase. New Time and Leader subscription rates will bo: Per Year in Utah $J4)0 To Servicemen and Women . $2X0 Subscriptions outside of Utah $2X0 The Copper Printing Company. The Magna Times and Garfield Leader will not be published next week, August 8th, inasmuch as members of the Copper Printing Company staff are taking their annual vacation. The printing shop will be closed until August 11th, and any news or information on printing may be obtained by dialing 6112 from August 1st to 10th. Eliminating one issue during vacation time is a proceedure employed by practically all weekly newspapers. Thank you for your kind consideration. Three Garfield Youths Picked Up For House Pilfering Three Garfield boys, ages 11 and 12 years, have been picked up during the past week by deputy sheriff Weston Haslam, and they admitted to rifling a number of Garfield hornet. Guns and other things were found in their possession. Upon recovery of the articles, the youths were released to the custody of their parents and placed on probation. However, if such thefts occur again, the boys will be turned over to the Juvenile court, according to Deputy Iiaslam. Oquirrh Stake Outing Ready For Tonight The annual Oquirrh Stake outing will beheld this Thursday evening, July 31st at the Utah Copper Community Park, featured by a parade of miniature floats, manned by children. Very Enjoyable The open ditch located just east Merton Way in Magna wiU be supplied with pipe and filled, according to an announcement by Mr. P. H. Ensign, General Superintendent of Mills, Utah Copper Division, Kennecott Copper Corporation. The project is a joint one between the company and residents. The company will furnish and install the pipe. People living in the vicinity of the ditch have agreed to cover the pipe. Mr. Ensign said that the improvement is being made in response to numerous requests by local residents to remove what was thought to be a hazard to small children. Approximately 1060 feet of corrugated Iron pipe has been ordered. Mr. Ensign says that the pipe will be installed as soon as it is received and company crews can be spared to of Pushed by enthusiastic workers, sponsors, the two Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints Garfield wards, and loyal, supporting townspeople made the Garfield July 23rd and 24(h celebration a rousing success.
