He had invited me and several other Congressmen to lunch and I enjoyed it so much I thought you might like to hear about it, too. 1 arrived ten minutes early and the other Congressmen were already there. We sat around rehearsing bright things to say to the President. We needn't have. President Eisenhower strode in promptly at 1:00 p. m., introduced himself in such a natural, human imway that everybody was put mediately at ease. The President is an easy man to talk to and it was easy for him to keep the conversation general. This was a social meeting. I sat directly across the table from President Eisenhower and during lunch he remarked to me how he wished that all Representatives in Congress came from a district that had diversified people and industries. He said that Representatives from districts that are all dairy or all manufacturing or all coal mining don't get much chance to get a whole picture of the National program. I was proud to represent a diversified district Nearly every person at the lunch had an individual waiter assigned to him- - They were very efficient, too. I asked the President where he recruited such a staff. He said without cracking a smile that they were all under Civil Service. Sort of career waiters, so to speak. President Eisenhower then took us for a guided tour of the White House. I was particularly impressed by a jeweled sword and scabbard in the trophy room and asked the President where it came from. He said it was presented to him by an Indian Prince who protested at the time he was ashamed at the modesty of the gift. I remarked that the numerous six carat jewels that encrusted the scabbard then must be false. The President smiled and said the same thing occurred to him so he had called a jeweler to have it examined. They are real.
