These contributions will put on the firing line over 2,000 lay and professional workers, all volunteers except for a central staff of the Utah Tuberculosis and Health Association. They wage a relentless war a-gainst respiratory disease, including the problems of air pollution tnd cigarette smoking. It Is interesting to observe a substantial decline between 1962 and 1966 in the number of deaths from communicable respiratory diseases such as tuberculosis, influenza, whoop-ping cough and measles, for example. But these reductions have been far overshadowed by the marked rise in deaths from emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The 13.8 per cent increase in deaths due to respiratory disease is more than twice the increase recorded by deaths from all causes in the U.S. in 1966. While the number of emphysema deaths in men is six times greater than in women, the percentage increase In emphysema deaths was higher among females. Mrs. Tebbs said that if any families in Garfield County did not receive Christmas Seals this year, they may request them by writing or calling her. |
