Show Heart Fund Drive Fights Nations No. 1 Killer The 1962 Heart Fund campaign will continue through February, reaching a peak during Heart Sunday weekend on Feb. 23-25, when more than a million and a half volunteers call at homes in the nation for contributions. The Panguitch Business and Professional Woman's Club will sponsor the local drive with Mrs. Hilda Gardner as chairman. The nation's Number One health enemy, the heart and blood vessel diseases, claimed more lives in Garfield and Piute Counties during the past year than any other cause of death, it was reported today. Cardiovascular deaths tot-aled 18 for the two counties, according to Dr. James F. Or-me, president of the Utah Heart Association which compiled the figures from the official records of the Bureau of Vital Statistics, Utah Dept. of Public Health. Tho total number of deaths from all causes was 4.3 The heart diseases accounted for 41.9 per cent of 'All deaths. The next two leading causes of death, according to official statistics, were cancer 9, accidents 5. Wasatch County nad the highest rate of heart deaths in the state with 59.5 per cent. Locally, cardiovascular diseases caused 38.2 per cent of the deaths in Garfield County. Medical science has made impressive gains in the fight against heart and blood vessel diseases. Much of this progress has resulted from scientific research made possible by public funds contributed to the Heart Fund. With your continued help, an expanded research program might produce new major breakthroughs within the lifetimes of many of us. |
