Show The Garfield County Insider Page 4 FYJPANGUITCHI July 28, 2011 EtIMMAIMEWAREM,JD IS by Vicki D. Syrett 679-8687 or vickidiane36@hotmail.com What a glorious day the 23rd was. Started off with the scout's breakfast and continued on through the games at the park. The race at the Panguitch Drug had runners and the winner was Tate Douglas from Nephi took first place and our own Eon Anderson an eighth grader took 2nd and McKenzie Allied took first in the women's division. Man y said this was the best ever parade. It was fun to see all the kids involved and having the families of the Guardsmen's that are in Iraq as the Grand Marshals was a wonderful touch. We had a real cow, a dog with a saddle on it and a guy taking a bath and a lot of horses. . A lot of the winning teams were in the parade including the State Volleyball Champs and the Cal Ripken Baseball champions and the Town's Little League All Stars. It was good to see Clark Howard's beautiful Model A, for not running in many years it sure sounded good. It was a real fun parade and I doubt any kid left without a bag of candy. I told Claudia Crump years ago that she wasn't old enough to be in the Rhythm Band, however it was great to see that float loaded with all those wonderful women, they also entertained at the DUP historical presentation The Panguitch Lions luncheon came off really well. All those that wanted to know w here the corn came from, it was Joe's market, wasn't it delicious? I had three ears. Many thanks to all of those that contributed to this luncheon it allowed us to keep the price as low as we did. This year the Lions have really stepped up and helped out big time at all of these events and there is still one more event to go, the demolition derby on August 20. If the Fire Fighters don't have the fair building back by next year the Lions may keep the tradition going on the 24th till the Firefighters are ready, to get back to their pit barbecue. Hatch Town had fire works in the evening to finish of the day. Monday the 25th was the start of the Western Regional Little League series and those games run through Friday, so head on down to the ball field and watch a really fun event. Hailey Sawyer is off to Germany to start her professional career in basketball. How exciting is that! if she needs any fan support my family would love to go watch, of course we would need tickets. It was fun watching her play up at the University. Germany is a beautiful country, heavily wooded. Leland Pollock our bull dog County Commissioner has been back in Washington D.C. meeting with Senator Orin Hatch about the Secure Rural Schools Self Determination Act. Back in 1908 these funds were set up to give the Counties like Garfield that is made up of 96% of BLM land a way to make money. At that time we got 25% of any profit taken off the land, however since the logging industry is down, government changed this to a more realistic fund and the School District and the County received 3 and 1/4 million dollars over 4 years. This money all but saved our district, but it is running out next year. There is where Leland comes in, he said Senator Hatch, who is a ranking member of the finance committee was very receptive to the commissioner request to help extend the funding for the rural schools like ours. We will know in October if this will come about. Leland is putting his heart and soul into his elected position. Thanks Leland. Bryce Canyon is hosting a Geology Festival on July 28-30. There will be a Canyon hike --- 3-miles into the canyon with a ranger Thurs. Friday and Sat. starting at 9:00 am. Meet at Sunrise Point. There will be a Mossy Cave hike at 9:00 am. on Friday and Saturday. Obtain free tickets for the Mossy Cave Hike and Geology for family events at BC information center at the Visitors Center. Call 435-834-5290 for reservations. Boulder is getting a new Multi-purpose community center, thanks to grants from CIB. The town is hoping for completions of the building in the late fall. The Town of Henrieville lost their fire station and the fire equipment due to a sudden collapse of the building in late January 2010. And the CIB (Community Impact Fund Board) came to their rescue and funded a replacement station and a new fire truck. On July 2nd of this year they had a grand opening celebration. Attention: all school bus drivers. The State required in-service will be held Friday, July 29th and it starts at 8:30 am. at the Kanab Middle School. Bring your tennis shoes; there will be a Physical Assessment after the last class on Friday. On Wednesday, August 3rd, there will be a district inservice and training meeting on the new system. The meeting will be at the district office. Thanks to Alex Nay for the fine job in clearing the weed out at the Spry Cemetery, it looks great! Any volunteers who would like a large or small project talk to Pat Oetting at 676-2418. Those who are wondering about the engraved brick for the Quilt Walk Park, they are being engraved now and will be in place ASAP. Thanks for your patience. The weather delayed the engraving. Speaking of the Quilt Walk Park did you notice the new fence? This is the work of the Markay Englestead crew. Thank to Emma Alstrom for the inconvenience this caused her. Additional lighting will be in place as soon as time permits, our volunteer crew also has jobs (smile). There is a lot of building as well as yard work going on around town. It sure adds to the beauty of our town. Speaking of yard work; great job city workers! If you have not been down to the Fair Building and seen the remarkable transformation of the building into County offices it is worth the trip. Nice job! It also looks like the County Building is going full steam ahead. It will be a beautiful addition to the community. The DUP Museum is opened on Friday and Saturday from 5-8 pm. It will be opened until the end of August so stop by and learn some Panguitch history. I saw school supplies in the stores and I even saw Halloween decorations for sale! Enjoy the summer before it is gone. There was a wonderful parade and lots of roadside viewers. It was a great day. Games, inflatables, bake sale, wonderful Indian Tacos, and other foods, and friends. What more could you ask for on a holiday like this. To top it off there was a rodeo that was fun and then the fantastic fireworks at Ruby's Inn. All done so well. Thanks to the Henrieville people for making the 24th a great day and to Ruby's for the Rodeo and Fireworks. We honored our pioneer ancestors in a very good way. The girls divided into units that were named afters songs from the 50's. They were taught to believe in their self, in Christ, the 13th Article of Faith, and many special presentations were made that made it a wonderful camp. Sandy Johnson came and taught the girls how to make hair ribbon flowers and luminaries that were about making their light shine. Pres. Klin Chynoweth gave them hymn books and Steve Pollock was a special speaker one night telling what he has learned about life lately. The girls performed their skits and they were wonderful. The camp was held on the Stewart property up East Fork. They were in tents and they had a ball. The Stake Relief Society Presidency helped them to do a service project of making puffy tutu's to give to little girls who are in the Ronald Mc Donald Houses trying to get better. This was Dixie Burbidge's idea and it went well. They will donate the tutu's to the Ronald Mc Donald Houses for the little girls to cheer them up. We all know little girls love to dance and this will help to make them feel happy while undergoing treatments. The girls and the leaders spent time in the Tropic Reservoir and played in the water. The Tropic Fire Department helped to keep them safe and also to get wet. Everyone stayed safe and had a very good time. They also used canoe/s. There was a lot of support from all the bishoprics and Stake Presidency as well as many visiting young women who came and attended camp with the local girls. They had speakers in all the different classes. Debbie Allen from Escalante had Lori All and Janeace helping her cook all the great food. The Camp Leaders were Cami Mangum, Jill Phillips, Beth Johnson who all did an outstanding job of leading and guiding the girls. Monica Taylor, Holly Baugh, Rhonda Barney helped as well with a big vote of thanks from all the girls. Jennifer Christensen did the "Especially for Camp - Daughters of God" and gave them all necklaces to wear. Carrie Ryan, Kayenta Ryan and Jill of Boulder did Certification for Camp. Helped the girls pass off all the requirements needed. This has been one of the best years at camp and everyone made lots of new friends. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make this camp a success.
