Show The Garfield County Insider =girl PANGUITCH nikrakiiiiiiiio *pia cos March 23 was the official start of spring, but the real signs are there also. Henrie's Drive In is open and the snow we are getting is melting off as quickly as it comes. The Diablo Restaurant in Hatch is also open. It's good to see allof the college student's home on Spring break. An old neighbor Amanda (Elmer) Zillian was home on leave and did she look sharp in her Army uniform or what? I remember her, what seemed like yesterday, she was riding around town on her little pink bike. Amanda has chosen to be a Medic and has just returned from Korea, after a year's tour. She is reenlisting in May and her unit is schedule to go to Afghanistan in a year or so. Pat and I just returned from the California coast, the weather was good and we got some real needed rest. There were a lot of people on the roads, I wonder when anyone works. The 2010 Census numbers have been released. For the first time I think, Garfield County now has 5,172 people living here. I believe if my memory is right the 2000 Census there were 4,713 here. Panguitch stayed about the same with 1,520 people; however the additional people are in new Bryce Canyon City which has 196 now living there. Henrieville with 230 and Cannonville with 167 also picked up some people. For your information Cedar has 28,857, Washington City 18,761, St. George 72,897 and Washington County 138,115. The Resettlement Birthday Party was really well attended, thanks to Cheryl Church and all her helpers. This is a good tradition that needs to keep going over the years. I drove the bus that took a group of Seventh graders out to Bryce Canyon to learn about snow shoeing from Marylyn Bulkley and Ranger Jim. Head Teacher Julie Chidester and Frank Houston accompanied the students on their trek. Marylyn left me some snowshoes to try out, well I don't know whether it was the 8000 ft elevation or it's not as easy as it looks. I got out about a half mile when I though I had better go back, I was whipped by the time I got back to the bus. It didn't help any with the kids having races after they returned; I have decided I need to change my exercise program. My hat is off to Julie and Frank who accompanied the kids the whole way. Marylyn and the Ranger talked to the students about the terrain and it was a great Geology Class. The snow was melting fast and the next week class was cancelled. The Constitution Bowl was very impressive, with a three way tie between Panguitch's A team, freshmen team and Bryce Valley. They went for a final round and Panguitch's A team ended up 1st, followed by the Freshmen in second and Bryce Valley in third. All of the kids that take part are the real winners. Most of the teams throughout the State that were to be here got scared off by the snow, hopefully next year the weather will be a little kinder. In the past the whole student body was there for the competition, but the School Board didn't feel it was appropriate to take time out of the school day. This really takes away from all the students learning about the Constitution. The Drama Class did real well at the Region 20 competition in Escalante, taking second place. Their play also ended up in second place, with the first two plays going on to State. Nineteen of our students qualified in drama, for State. State will be held in Parowan in April and is a fun time for the students to perform. Piute who is always tough, took first place. Melissa Veater with Southwest Center Prevention has started a Coalition with members and leaders of the community to prevent substance abuse in the youth in our communmity. Recent budget cuts from the State have cause most of the current substance abuse prevention programs in our community to be take away. The coalition is working on a grant right now to reistate some of the previous prevention programs. The coaltion has been very active educating the community thus far. They have scheduled some assemblies for the schools that is being funded by donations from the city, county and LDS chuch and also planning lessons to be presented in all the churches in the community, along with a Community Family Night to be held this spring. The also have placed small books in business in the community "Navigating the teen years" for people to look at while they are waiting and sent home small reminders handouts at Elementary SEP's with a pencil that says"Don't forget to Pencil in some time to talk to your kids about substance abuse". For more information on the coalition you can follow their blog spot on southwestprevention.com . Tammy Bennett's FCCLA took 29 competitors to Layton for the State Competition. They came away with 7 first place finishes; all seven will be going to the National Competition: Kennedy Barney, Kambree Josie, Rowdy Miller, Chapel Campbell, Makayla Heaton, Sierra Allen and Cianna Swartzmiller. Many of the students were up against some stiff competition and did real well, with there very good projects. This week it is the FBLA's turn for State competition. Shawn Caine is taking 18 competitors up to Layton for this competition. They, like the FCCLA are competing against all of the schools in the State. This type of competition goes a long way in showing the students how they can succeed against anyone. We have a new store opening up in the old ERA building. Melissa Veater's store will be named "Forget Me Not" Boutique. Melissa will have gifts of all kinds, for what ever your occasion. Stop by and say hello and check out the merchandise. Hope all is well with you. Mack 0. GARAGE DOORS PROW= AG MARKET NEWS Receipts: 814; Last Week: 1,330. Last Year: 1,235.
