Show EverylCounts Fellowship Ey, 6,4444 Fellowshipping isn't just for church anymore. And it's not just for people in a certain religion. We should be fellowshipping anyone and everyone, don't you think? Take the Navy Colonel I sat next to on a recent plane ride east who told me about his prostate cancer. Or the Greek couple I sat next to on the return flight who just wanted to talk. Or about the new convert I met at a recent baptism who shared about his gastric bypass surgery and how he can only eat spoonfuls of certain foods at a time. Or the civilian contractor at the baggage claim who will soon be heading to Afghanistan to conduct training classes to our military. Or the lawyer on another flight who told me about how he represented a trucker who drove over this 18 mile bridge in the Chesapeake Bay. Everyone's got a story. Everyone's got a mission. Everyone's got a purpose. Yet, there are people walking all around us wondering –even if they seem stalwart— if anyone, some- Page 3 The Garfield County Insider October 21, 2010 1-401144€14, one, will reach out and genuinely ask about them instead of ignore them. Even today. That said, if there's someone that comes to mind, right this moment that could use a phone call and or visit, don't wait. Do it and do it now. And it doesn't necessarily have to be someone that you know. It could be a complete stranger as were all of those people I mentioned above. Strike up a conversation, open the door for someone, say something kind, smile, take time out of your busy crazy schedule to think about another even for just a moment. That moment could be huge in the life of another. Your call or visit might be life altering or changing. Someone may have even prayed for you to call or visit or more importantly to acknowledge their existence. So, listen, listen, listen for that prompting. Or how about calling or visiting someone's who's been gossiped about or one who has rumors running rampant about them? Don't ignore the "white elephants" in the room, town, county, work or at school. Be the one known for fellowshipping someone regardless. Be the one who puts down his cell phone or IPod or golf clubs or to do list and asks, "Who needs me right now?" Then, act. You will be glad you did. I think Mother Teresa would agree judging from these words she once uttered, "Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat." Therefore, listen to the spirit leading you to those who are crying out, "Fellowship me!" After all, isn't that more important than a cell phone, IPod, golf clubs or to do list? I'll let you marinate on that one. Cynthia Kimball Humphreys is a professional speaker and trainer through her company Every 1 Counts, LLC. She writes a column for weeklies in southern Utah and is a southern Utah correspondent for the Deseret News. Her column, "Every 1Counts," appears on deseretnews. com. E-mail: kimball@every 1 counts .net the lAuGhiNg pOiNtn / 4\ Technical Support Said to be an actual call to a computer techsupport line, and I don't doubt it. "My computer's power just died." "OK. Are the other computers in that room working? "Yes." "What were you doing right before it went out?" "I had just plugged my curling iron into the power strip." "Really? What else is plugged into there?" "Well, my radio, my space heater, my cup warmer, my printer, my monitor, and my computer." "Did you unplug anything to plug your curling iron in?" "Yes, my printer." "Well, unplug the curling iron, plug the printer back in and press the button on the power strip." "Hey! My computer is working now! Is there something wrong with the power strip?" Speedy Delivery I took a package to the post office to mail the other day. The clerk said, "This will cost $2.40 for fast delivery or $1.30 for slower service." "There is no hurry," I said, "just so the package is delivered in my lifetime." "That will be $2.40, please." Two-Dollar Bills When the U.S. Mint reissued two-dollar bills, I thought they might someday become collector's items. I went to the bank and picked up a hundred, serially numbered and still in their original band. On my next trip to my parent's house, I gave the $200 to my mother and said, "Take good care of these. They might be worth something someday." Several months later I asked Mom if she was keeping the two-dollar bills safe. "Oh, yes!" she replied. "I deposited them in the bank the day after you left." During the Exam During the final exam, the professor noticed that one student kept looking at his hand before writing down an answer on his test. This went on throughout the entire exam, leaving the professor no other choice than to check on the student's test-taking habit. "Is there something interesting written on your palm?" "Not at all, Professor. It's all pretty boring." Barnett's ORTHODONTICS www.bracesbybarnett.com Toll Free 1-888 BRACE ME True Meaning A schoolteacher was taking her first golfing lesson. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources will be continuing the Chronic Wasting Disease monitoring program with testing to be done in 4 hunting units. Division biologists will be in the field at 4 locations to take tissue samples from deer harvested in the Pine Valley, Zion, Panguitch and Paunsaugunt units. Wildlife biologist Jason Nicholes said, "Each year we sample different areas within the state to test for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). This is a prion caused, neurological disease found in deer and elk that produces small lesions in the brains of effected animals. It is classified as a GARAGE DOORS transmissible spongiform encephalopathy and is similar to mad cow disease in cattle or scrapie in sheep. We will be sampling on the 4 units in the southwest corner of the southern region this year (Pine Valley, Zion, Panguitch and Paunsaugunt). We will have 4 check stations that we will operate from 9:00 am until dark on the first two days (Oct 23rd and 24th)." The locations of the 4 stations will be: 1. The Cottonwood Inn east of Enterprise - Junction of Hwy 18 and Enterprise Main Street. 2. The intersection of Old Hwy 91 and the turn off to Gunlock reservoir on the Shivwits Reservation, NW of St. George. 3. The pull out on Highway Custom STAINING... (wood) Custom PAINTING... The Social Security Act provides for an automatic increase in Social Security and SSI benefits if there is an increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) from the third quarter of the last year a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) was determined to the third quarter of the current year. As determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is no increase in the CPI-W from the third quarter of 2008, the last year a COLA was determined, to the third quarter of 2010, therefore, under existing law, there can be no COLA in 2011. Other changes that would normally take effect based on changes in the national average wage index also will not take effect in January 2011. Since there is no COLA, the statute also prohibits a change in the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax as well as the retirement earnings test exempt amounts. These amounts will remain unchanged in 2011. The attached fact sheet provides more information on 2011 Social Security and SSI changes. Information about Medicare changes for 2011, when available, will be found at www.Medicare. gov. The Department of Health and Human Services has not yet announced if there will be any Medicare premium changes for 2011. Should there be an increase in the Medicare Part B premium, the law contains a "hold harmless" provision that protects more than 70 percent of Social Security beneficiaries from paying a higher Part B premium, in order to avoid reducing their net Social Security benefit. Those not protected include higher income beneficiaries subject to an income-adjusted Part B premium and beneficiaries newly entitled to Part B in 2011. In addition, almost 20 percent of beneficiaries have their Medicare Part B premiums paid by state medical assistance programs and thus will see no change in their Social Security benefit. The state will be required to pay any Medicare Part B premium increase. For additional information about the 2011 COLA, go to www.socialsecurity. gov/cola.
