Show The Garfield County Insider September 23, 2010 giarma.,..i wrcll by Vicki D. Syrett 679-8687 or vickidiane36@hotmail.com Pat and I got back yesterday from a badly needed week in Morro Bay, California. Pat got in some rest and reading and I got in some golf. Morro Bay is a wonderful place on the coast, it has a huge rock in its harbor. We visited HearstCastle, it was built after WW 1. The Hearst family bought 88,000 acres, for the whopping price of $.68 cents an acre. William Randolph Hearst the only son was a newspaper mogul and owned over hundred publications, built the castle. Hearst went to Europe after the war and bought most of what is in side the castle, for pennies on the dollar. Ceilings, tapestries, flooring, even a 3500 year old statue from Egypt and had it shipped to the dock on the ocean, below the castle. So if you never get to go to Europe Hearst's Castle is the next best thing. There is another Castle in North Carolina, it is the Biltmore House and has 155 rooms in it. It is also furnished with art work, ceilings, floors, and tapestries, from Europe. Europe passed the antiquity act that stopped the pillaging of the castles there. So even if someone had the money these places couldn't be built today. The reason we went to Mono Bay was the Torrance Fighters reunion that is held ever two years. So far the reunion has been held all over the western states, it started in the late 80s. These are fun guys that I worked with for 30 years, 24 hours a day and they became a big brotherhood. These reunions are double edged swords, it is great to see everyone, but it is so sad to learn of those that passed vLOYAL on in the last two years. We lost 5 in this last two year period and 4 more have late stages of cancer. Fire fighting is considered one of the most dangerous occupations there is. When most of us started we used canister mask and it did little to keep out the bad stuff. A lot of the cancers are showing up many years later, the State is finally raising the presumptive cancer cases from 5 years to 15. The one good thing is no one seems to get any older, it's amazing, they are functioning very well in their late 70s even playing golf. Some have even moved to small communities and seemed to really enjoy their retirement. Our week was foggy all day long, but there is nothing like the beach, with the otters and seals swimming in the bay. Don't forget the Hospital Foundation Dinner on Oct. 1st they like to have you buy your tickets in advance so they will know how much food to provide. You can get tickets by calling Becky Yard at 676-8168 or Lynne Neilson at 676-1262. It's a fun evening with great food, the hot babes from the Thrift Store modeling some of they great finds that are available at the store. This weekend is the Red Rock Powwow at the Triple C Arena. It will be held of Friday and Saturday. This is fun entertainment with everyone in their bright colored outfits. There are many young children that take part and keep their traditions alive. Saturday morning at 9am will be the food collection drive for the Care and Share. If no one picks up your food, you can deliver it your self, to the Care and Share or call me at (6762418) and I'll come and get it. Recently the Smoke House replaced their roof, I don't know about you but I got a nose bleed watching those guys. The roof is a long ways up there and it is also very steep, not my kind of work. The new roof really blends in with their building and look very good. Mack please let everyone know that I take donations for the Volunteer Fire Dept. at The Old Firehouse(Thunder Horses Mercantile). People have been generous. The jar is filling up again since I had them empty it in August. Beckie I missed the last School Board meeting, but I understand they decided to take a band aid approach to fixing the pool so it can be used. I was hoping that the pool would be done right. The ventilation in the pool area, when the wind is blowing in the right direction blows the chorine fumes back into the schools ventilation system and it has affected a number of the teacher's health. Thank you, Kay Englestead for voting against this decision. Around the first of October I will be back with the fluoride mouth wash for the 13th year, at the Elementary School so be sure to have your children signed up. I know it's early but we will be putting on the Lions Club sponsored Thanksgiving Dinner again this year, this is the third year and the participation keep growing, so put it on your calendar. Keep the good news coming. Dear Editor: THE DEBT ABYSS Our government is going to provide us with the golden opportunity to pay off our credit card debt with pennies on the dollar. With the federal budget deficit now running in excess of $1.5 trillion this year and increasing, the Obama administration's own 10 year budget plan predicts that the national debt of the U.S. will exceed $25 trillion in 2019. This year the interest on our national debt will be about $400 billion. By using simple math, the interest expense in 2019 on our national debt of $25 trillion at an interest rate of 12% will grow to $3.0 trillion. Interest rates will dramatically increase following rating agencies downgrade of our sovereign debt to a junk rating. At some total debt level (the debt abyss) a tipping point will occur when our government can no longer pay the interest which will cause the debt bomb to explode. You will not have to wait until 2019 for our sovereign debt default. The Federal Reserve is now being forced to partially fund our budget deficit using a scheme called quantitative easing (QE) which is a politically correct way to describe, "Creating Money Out Of Thin Air." For example, QE was recently used to create $1.3 trillion to buy mortgage backed securities from banks. With QE, inflation will gradually build up to a crescendo. The result is a crack-up boom when people realize the dollar is crashing and will frantically spend all their paper money in an attempt to exchange it for something of value. When that happens, credit cards can be paid off with 154 pre-1982 pennies per pound of copper that were accumulated long before the dollar collapse. Yours truly, Robert A. Dalquist, Orange, CA 92865 Rebecca Wagstaff, her daughter Miriam, dad Matt Wetzel and a niece, Eliza Sorensen went to Marysvale Canyon on September 4th to attend a Wetzel Sibling's Reunion. It was for Matt's brother's and sisters and their descendants. It was very nice. Rebecca talked with Mauna Wilson, Matt's sister, who told her she is actually related to the Syrett's through the Riding family. It is a small world. Congratulations to our relay team runners who ran 187 miles and came in 37th out of 200 teams. We are proud of you. They raced from Brian Head to Cedar City to Veyo, Snow Canyon an so on. Good work team. The Senior Citizen's bus now has a full time driver and they will be making trips to St. George and Cedar City twice a month. The first Monday of the month will find them going to St. George for doctors appointments, shopping. or even a Temple trip. The Third Monday they will go to Cedar City for shopping and doctors or other appointment. The bus will leave Tropic at 8:00 A.M. so people can make their appointments on time. The first trip on October 4th will be to St. George and the second trip on October 18th. Please call either Donna Chynoweth at 8264317 or Vicki Ahlstrom at 679-8921 to arrange for your ride. Let's support the bus so we can keep it going for out people. Hope you were able to attend the fund raiser at the Bryce Valley Elementary for the Safe Sidewalk fund. There is enough money to do one block at the present time and they are hoping to raise enough more to do a second block right away. On September 23rd there will be a public meeting to express your frustrations regarding the recent road closures mandated by the Forest Service. Representatives from the office of Sen. Orin Hatch, Bob Bennett and other officials will be in attendance. Starts at 6:00 P.M. at the Heritage Center in Tropic. The Chimney Sweep will be in the Tropic area on October 4th and 5th. Anyone interested should contact Sandrea Francisco or the Tropic Town Office. We sure don't want to be putting out any chimney fires this year. The fires up north are bad enough. Make sure you ashes are cold before depositing them in any of the green dumpsters around town and do not pile them along the roadways. Also the Fire Department would like to remind you to check and/or change the batteries in your fire alarms/smoke detectors. Mayor Brinkerhoff and the Town Council are working hard to get the State's authorization to use the trash pile. It will be only for agricultural waste, such as limbs, shrubs, leaves, grass, etc. No boards, appliances, cement, metals or batteries of any kind allowed. Tropic Town is working with the County in providing a trailer for this type of debris. A $500 fine has been affixed to anyone dumping anything other than what is outlined. We are regulated by the state and any violations will cease the operation. The operation hours for the County's Trash Pile is Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. You can get a copy of the plan for the Agricultural Waste Management at the Tropic Town Office. We would also like to make you aware of the ongoing problem with the misuse of the Town Park and it facilities. Please folks let's take care of our beautiful park and it facilities. We are very lucky to have it to use. We are hoping those responsible will take note and stop misusing the park. Craig and Krista Taylor and children were visiting in Tropic this weekend. They had their sweet little daughter blessed and given a name by Herb Baugh on Sunday. Older brother Kashton was delighted with the whole process. Krista is the daughter of Alyson Sudweeks and the granddaughter of Lynden and Giovanna Sudweeks also of Tropic. The fires raging in Herriman and that area are intense and scary. It is sad to watch those beautiful homes go up in smoke and not be able to do anything about. We wish those folks some good luck and safety. Also the fire over by 1-70 has Chance Stewart and Willie Flores and their team fighting that fire that has been burning for a long time. Stay safe you firefighters. Jessica Stewart and family have had Roger and Leeann Blake of Erda here visiting. They built them a nice cabin so they could come down and visit more often and it is always good to see them. They also spend time on finishing up the work on the home. This weekend they came to comfort Maren Stewart. She was coming home from school on Friday and fell from her bike and cut her chin up pretty badly. She had to have 6 stitches. I asked her it she cried and she said no because they deadened it. Brave young lady. She is the daughter of Chance and Jessica Stewart. Cole is very proudly showing off his new boots and shoes. Just found out that Wade Pollock and his family are back in Tropic. We welcome them back home. Joseph Jensen just returned from Concepcion' Chile' and of course Art and Vicki Syrett are the delighted grandparents. His family came down to escort him home and meet the people he as been seeing for the past two years. J. J. Dunham, Bryce Syrett and son Easton talked in Henrieville today. Shawn Chynoweth and his daughters sang a gorgeous song on kindness which was the topic of the talks. J. J. leaves on Nov. 17th for his mission to Bolivia. Cherish Syrett accompanied her two daughters, Brooklyn and Cheyenne as they sang a medley of songs. Very nice. Roger Shelby was released as Henrieville's ward clerk and Terry Clark was called to fill the vacancy. Bryan Clark, son of Terry and Suzi Clark, made a fire pit and built benches in the Henrieville park as part of his Eagle project. IT is very nice we are told. On October 7th the Escalante Stake and the Powell Point Boy Scout District will be celebrating 100 years in Scouting with a dinner and program. It will be for all Cubs, Scouts, Leaders and Parents of the scouts and will be in Escalante at the Stake Center. If you would like to contribute to the Utah Food Bank you can put non-perishable canned goods in a sack. Boy Scouts will come around and collect them off the porch or you can leave them at the Tropic Ward and they will get them. Also the Deseret Industries trailer is here and you are welcome to put any usable goods inside for them. This is on the 25th. This coming Saturday, the 25th of September will be the time to gather and put together the Humanitarian Kits. We will meet at 4:30 to do this worthy project. Congratulations to Shawn Syrett who received his call to the Uttica New York Mission. He will leave on November 17th and is pretty excited about it. Shawn is the son of Eric and Tracy Syrett of Tropic. John Cloud, son of Dan and LaNae Cloud has advanced to a Teacher. Kaden Ramsay, son of Joey and Bree Shakespeare has graduated from Primary and is now a Deacon. Joshua Alvey, son of Kerry and JoNiel Alvey has become a Teacher. Carl Boyd and Doug Ahlstrom are both now High Priests. The Boy Scouts would like to thank all who contributed to their "Friends of Scouting" drive and want you to know it is not too late to still contribute if you want to. Thanks to those who already have. Ferrell Brinkerhoff and Berkley Thompson were the speakers in Tropic today and the Young Women's Choir sang a beautiful song. They were led by Karen Ott and Taylor Talbot accompanied them on the piano. You all have a good week and please call or email your news to me. Thanks VS SENIOR CITIZEN MENU Call for lunch by 10:00 A.
