Se Habla Espanol Those of us older than &$$#%&^*&#$ remember the Indian Head pennies. There are many facinating facts about those and subsquent designs. See how many you know are true: (Answers at bottom) 1) The portrait on the Indian Head penny was believed to be Chief Ouray (b-1833). Know as a Man of Peace, he was appointed "Head Chief of the Utes" by the US government (True or False?) 2) It was nicnamed a 'copper' when introduced in 1859 (T/F) 3) Two different penny designs were minted in 1909 (T/F) 4) The first I H penny had a laurel not oak wreath - on the back (T/F) 5) The portrait model was the wife of (the) engraver, James B. Longacre (T/F) 6) American passion for pennies is stronger (today) than ever before (T/F) - EXTRA DEER PERMITS FOR YOUNG HUNTERS If you'll be 18 years of age or younger on Aug. 21, 2010 you can still get a permit to hunt buck deer in Utah this fall. Starting at 7 a.m. on July 8, 2010 a total of 1,500 general statewide archery buck deer permits will go on sale. You can buy a permit at the Division of Wildlife Resource's website (wildlife.utah.gov), at any DWR office and from more than 300 hunting license agents across Utah. The youth permits are not part of the state's current 95,000 general deer permit cap. They're extra permits the Utah Wildlife Board added to give young hunters a better chance to hunt this fall. Anis Aoude, big game coordinator for the DWR, says more than 15,000 young hunters applied for a general deer hunting permit this year. More than 2,000 of those hunters didn't draw one. Adding 1,500 archery permits should give most of these young hunters a chance to hunt. Because success during the archery hunt is low, biologists feel putting 1,500 extra young hunters in the field will not have a negative effect on the state's deer herds. (The success rate during Utah's 2009 general archery buck deer hunt was 17 percent. That's compared to 29 percent during the muzzleloader hunt and 30 percent during the rifle hunt.) "You may not realize it, but in North America, hunters and anglers provide almost all of the funding to manage wildlife. And all of us get to enjoy the wildlife that the sportsmen are paying to manage," Aoude says. "That's why it's so important that young people pick up the sport of hunting." For more information about the youth archery permits, call the nearest Division of Wildlife Resources office or the Division's Salt Lake City office at 801-538-4700. Here are some randomly selected U.S. coin facts and trivia which may be of interest to collectors. 1. A foreign coin was the main coin in use for decades in the American colonies. The Spanish milled silver dollar, commonly known as the "pillar dollar" or "piece of eight" was legal currency in the U. S . until 1857. 2. The word "dime" is derived from the Latin word "decima", which means the "tenth part". 3. The Kennedy half dollar has been issued in three different mettalic composition varities, namely: .900 Fine Silver in 1964, .400 clad silver from 1965 and 1970, and cupro-nickel clad copper since 1971. 4. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST first appeared on a U.S. coin in 1864, during the Civil War. In particular, the two-cent piece, first minted in that year, was the first coin with the slogan Raining coins, money: There have been many incidences of raining money down from the sky. In 1940 nearly 1000 coins fell in the Meshchera region of Russia during a storm. To everyone's surprise, all those coins belonged to 16th century. In 1956, pennies and half pennies plopped down on children in Hanham, England as they were heading home from school. In 1957, numerous 1,000 franks currency notes had showered on a gathering of people. In 1976, two clergymen watched as 2,000 marks worth of bank notes fluttered down from a clear sky in Limburg, West Germany. In 1982, a number of children in Manchester, England ran to a nearby shop to buy chocolates. The shopkeeper suspected the children had stolen money from the fund in Church. But the children told him that the coins fell down from the sky. At last he believed after verifying the fund. These are some of the "rain' incidents that are very amazing. Answers: (1) FALSE. There is NO Indian on these pennies! The Native American headdress crowns a stylized Lady Liberty! \ (2) FALSE. Due to its 12% nickel content it was actually nicknamed a 'nickel.' (A few years later that nickname shifted to the five cnet coin and persists to this day.) (3) TRUE. The last Indian Head penny and the first Lincoln cents were minted in the same year (1909). (4) TRUE. The reverse design was changed to an oak wreath and small shield the second year (1860) (5) FALSE. Tho the legend persists, it has never been proven that engraver James B Longacre uses his daughter, sarah as a model. (6) TRUE. For most collectors, the rarer/older means the more desirable. Also, when long standing designs change, such as the 1909-2009 celebration of the lincoln penny produced a special 4-coin series celebrating four different stages in Pres Lincoln's life. Its popularity seems to be growing yearly. It was the PERFECT weekend. The balloons in the early morning sky were amazing, such a serene colorful site to behold. How lucky I felt this weekend to be living in the Panguitch Valley, sitting on my front porch, drinking my coffee and taking in this wonderful scenery, truly God's country. When was the last time a hot air balloon landed in your back yard? I love the balloon festival, and appreciate all the time and effort it takes to put it on. Thanks again to all involved, including our local business owners, for making it a success. Connie Sawyer |
