Parents aren't immune from off performances ei- ther. Yes, sometimes they even have them. And sometimes they are really off as was the case of one competent school principal and mother who, on the first day back to school, was so frazzled and out of routine, that she left her young baby in her car strapped into a car seat --who she was supposed to drop off at day care earlier that morning before she began her day as principle-- parked in the school parking lot all day long on a very, very hot day. Tragically, her baby died. A man names John Powell once said, "The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing." And business man and author, Philip Crosby said, "Very few of the great leaders ever get through their careers without failing, sometimes dramatically." So the next time you have an off performance, and hopefully and prayfully it doesn't include leaving a child in a hot car all day long, forgive yourself, learn from your off performance, move on, work to be better next time, and don't let that performance define you or all of your performances. As lovely as the gesture was, it was clear from the first bite that the pie tasted bad. It was so inedible that we had to throw it away. Ever gracious and tactful, my wife sent the neighbors a note. It read: "Thank you very much for the pumpkin pie. Something like that doesn't last very long in our house." D BENNETT BASHES FEDERAL TAKEOVER OF STUDENT LOANS Says it will kill hundreds of jobs in Utah Senator Bob Bennett (R-Utah) today criticized another example of government expansion included in the Democrats' health care bill that mandates a federal takeover of student loans, saying it will create a huge problem in Utah where the student loan system actually works, eliminating hundreds of jobs in the beehive state. "This irresponsible provision slipped into the health care bill by the Democrats is just another clear illustration that the Obama administration thinks there is a one-size fits all government fix for everything," said Bennett. "Utah has the highest student loan repayment rate in the nation. Furthermore, the Utah Higher Education Assistance Authority has designed a loan repayment strategy that works for everyone by offering default rates lower than what the federal government can offer. The successful results of Utah's program clearly indicate that it is doing something right. Washington, meanwhile, is off by a long shot. It should refrain from engaging in another government-run program that would only cripple the strong system created in Utah, rather than allowing our great state to serve as an example for the nation to follow." The student loan provision inserted into the health care bill would put a stop to private banks offering student loans and would expand direct lending from the government instead. By doing so it will also eliminate thousands of jobs across the country, including more than 200 in Utah. It Makes Sense...B y Veda Hale It makes sense to be informed about your own bodies needs but not get so convinced of your own knowledge that you think you can always be your own doctor. Wow! That is a hard life lesson to get straight. We all know people who get a little knowledge and think it applies to themselves and everyone else. Especially if whatever they did helped them be healthier and happier. Women, with their nurturing nature and eye ever alert to the welfare of their loved ones, often stumble into blunders. (Probably the biggest one is that they can't keep their opinions to themselves.) That being said, (dran it!) it also doesn't make sense (or sometimes cents) to play ninny-winny and go running to the doctor with every little complaint. Maybe it is like weeding a garden. We might not know the names or functions of lots of weeds, but we know what doesn't seem to fit in a place for which we have a specific goal. We have goal for a feel-good, optimum-functioning body. So we ought to learn to do a little "weeding" on our own and know when to ask for professional help. How about thyroid problems? What makes sense to know about those? I choose to think I know that it can be a real problem for some people. How about for perhaps the most popular and well-known woman in the world? Oprah Whinfrey. Oh boy! She can tell a story! If anyone has the money and resources to have had the best medical advice in the world, you would think she did. But it took a great deal of miss-information and miss-diagnosis to wade through before she found some personal answers. Well, here is some "stick-my-neck-out" information that might be helpful. Remember, it is just something to put in your arsenal of personal smarts, AFTER you do your own inner communicating with your hight self and, in some cases, doctor. What I learned with a little net searching is that indeed the thyroid gland in the neck under the adam's apple when not functioning properly can cause dry skin, brittle nails, hair loss, fatigue, depression, weight gain, muscle and joint pain, hot and cold unnatural feelings, constipation, slower heart rate, among other complaints. So? If you suspect or wonder, first remember only a doctor can for sure diagnose, but when you go to him, if you choose that route, he would probably appreciate you taking the results of a simple little test you can run: Get an oral basel thermomature, shake down before bedtime, leave handy, put under arm for 10 minutes upon waking and before moving around, if temperature varies from normal (97.8 - 98.2) for three consecutive days, suspect something. Just suspect, I said. So much more for a doctor to check. (Yes, the newer kinds of thermometers can be used. The main thing to remember is that you want the lowest point in the day for your body temperature, which is upon waking.) If you are too busy or too poor to run to the doctor and if you don't have too many indications of trouble, then just adding little attention to diet might do the trick. Think of the things that have natural iodine like fish, eggs, iodized salt, kelp, seaweed, onion. I doubt any doctor would say these things are harmful. One site on net said: 1. Eat cruciferous vegetables, peanuts and soy products in moderation. These contain a substance called goitrogens, which may interfere with iodine uptake and increase hypothyroid symptoms. It is not necessary to eliminate these foods from your diet, but eat them in limited quantities. Avocado and coconut increase thyroid function. Avoid processed foods and caffeine. 2. Tap your thyroid to stimulate it. Your thyroid is located in the front of your neck. Imagine wearing a bow tie: That's where your thyroid rests. Three times a day, gently tap the area for 10 minutes with your fingertips. 3. Reduce stress. Consider yoga or meditation techniques that can lower blood pressure and improve stress reactions. Exercise lightly and regularly, and take a B-complex vitamin along with a multivitamin to balance stress hormones as well as improve general immune system response.
