Show The Garfield County Insider Page 4 Explore Escalante IN OUR TOWN jana@exploreescalante.com The Business of Art is a free seminar for artists, November 14, in Kanab. It’s designed for all visual artists in all disciplines. It is free and includes breakfast and lunch. Provided through a partnership of Dixie State College, the Center for Education, Business and the Arts and SWATC, every artist should attend this wonderful event. Prepare to bring some of your work to share during the “Breakfast Showcase”. Please bring your own easels if needed. Posters are up around town or call 435652-7675 for a registration form. You should see work progress on the “Welcome to Escalante” signs this week. They hope to get the concrete bases poured and textured. Harriet Priska gave her presentation to the City Council and they voted to support the effort to see if Escalante can qualify as a National Historic District. The information provided to the council states “there are no restrictions associated with National Register listing. Owners do not have to open their buildings to the public, nor do they need anyone’s approval for anything they do to their buildings” (outside normal citybuilding code/permitting requirements). National register listing does not affect the property taxes or how the buildings may be used. Brian Ruess, 44-yr old nephew of Everett Ruess, announced the DNA results from the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory in Rockville, MD have been accepted by the family. Those results show the bones found in the Utah wilderness last year were not that of Everett Ruess. I was sent a copy of the notice of a meeting by the Wide Hollow Water Conservency District for a Budget/Work Meeting on Friday, Oct. 30th at 6:00 PM at the Community Center. Topic - important issues to be discussed and voted October 29, 2009 on for the reservoir. The EA has not been published as of press time. Knight Family Productions will begin having dances at the old High School Gym. Friday, Oct. 20th will be the first beginning at 8PM until midnight. DJ Allen will provide you with country and top 40 tunes to dance to. Food and drinks will be available. This Friday is the “Costume Contest” Dance. Cost is $5.00 per person or $15 per family of 4+. They are working on getting things set to show movies on Saturdays once the dances take off. If you want to know what’s happening each week you can call 435-8264090. Come in and vote for your choice for the people’s choice award for the photo contest. Prize is $100 for the adult division and $50 for students. Prizes awarded Saturday, November 21st at 2:00 PM. The election is underway with early voting at city hall 1-5 PM daily. Don’t forget to take your id with you or you won’t be able to vote. This election is about change. Half the candidates are progressives seeking change, the other half want to finish what’s been started. It’s up to each voter to decide what they want. The will of the majority will prevail. Be sure you vote what you want and the city will go forward based on your votes. Please vote. I get a wide variety of comments, phone calls and emails about my column. I respond to those that sign their letters, the others I simply discard. Erica Walz was one of those that left her name and number and would like me to revisit the issue of zoning and horses – I’ll do that next week. Senior Meals: Nov. 3rd – Chicken Strips; Nov 4th – Pan Pizza; Nov 5th – White Beans and Ham. Happy Birthday to Teena Pittman on Nov 2nd. Until next week - - - VOTE MELANI TORGERSEN WRITE IN ESCALANTE CITY COUNCIL: My name is Melani Torgersen and I am writing this article to inform you that I am running as a Write-in candidate for a two-year Escalante City Council seat. My husband and our family have lived in Escalante for 16 years and enjoy the lifestyle of Escalante and the friendships we have made. Our six children attend the public schools here and we consider this community our home. Even though there are other candidates for this position, I am not running “against” anyone. I have no agenda or cause that I will be pushing. I am running because I believe it is my duty to “share the load” civically. I have respect for those who have served, and are currently serving in the community. I recognize that the opportunities, services and conveniences we enjoy are a result of efforts made by those who have served before. I believe that it is our responsibility to make sure we continue to make progress and improve the City of Escalante. My contributions will include an open mind, a positive work ethic, a pleasant attitude and a love for our community. Some of my greatest values are honesty, integrity, consistency, fairness, clear communication, kindness and dependability. Many of you may not know me, but if you agree with these things that are important to me, I would ask for your vote on Election Day, November 3, 2009. I would appreciate the opportunity to visit with you if you have any concerns or questions you would like to discuss. Feel free to contact me at 826-4665. A local family we all know and love is being featured on the Disney Channel on the program “What a LIfe” in the Family Business Episodes. The Pete Mangum family had 20 Disney people who came to see them working their horse rides, in the fields, at their barn, and just everyday life. The people were so intrigued with what went on that they brought their whole crew out to see the family and the area. They are one of three families who are being shown on this series.
