Show Page 5 The Garfield County Insider October 22, 2009 IN OUR TOWN FYI PANGUITCH obituaries William Bercich Panguitch, UT By: Mack Oetting This is a tip on saving you and your spouse $2,000 or $3,000. Pat and I were planning on going to Maine and Vermont this fall for all the colors. Last week we went down to Kanab and I find it hard to believe that the East coast could be any better, with their colors, than that drive. There is a lot more reds in the trees than on the mountain that talked about early. The rock formations are beautiful with their split paint look. These trees are just starting to change, so unless the wind kicks up, go take in the sights. So take your saving and go down to Escabars Mexican food and pig out. North on 89’ is super beautiful as well. The deer hunt started last Saturday, my grandson Stefen who had never been hunting before, went with his friend and they had his deer by 8:30 am. I would have though with all the deer coming into town for the crab apples, you could sit on your porch and pick one off. I am not a hunter, but I would think this is going to be a hard year to get a deer with the warm weather and no snow. I think a lot of hiking will have to be involved, well good luck. Even though I don’t hunt I believe it is a great family outing and seeing all these empty nesters, whose kids have grown up, you have a whole world opened up with your grandkids, getting them out camping. There won’t be a repeat on the boy’s state cross country championship this year. This year Bryce Valley didn’t have a team so region 20 could only send 3 teams. Panguitch came in 4th and won’t be going this year. Piute won, Milford second and Valley was third. The girls on the other hand took second and will be going to state. Katie Rosser took second place, Katie is only a 10th grader, the girl that won has not lost a region race in 4 years. The race was run on Mt. Carmel golf course. We went down to Valley for the Region 20, volleyball tourney. We were told that the game with Piute for the finals would be at 5:00, we got there at 4;00 in time to see Piute win a second round game. The championship game started at 9:10 that is not a miss print, we did get to see some good ball, but they all seem to go 5 games. Valley beat Milford for 5th, Bryce Valley beat Wayne for 3rd place. The 3rd and 4th place teams get to play in, to see if they go to State, good luck Bryce and Wayne. This is the third time that Panguitch has played Piute. This is what the girls work so hard on, both teams are outstanding. Panguitch won in 4 sets, but it was a real battle, with Piute winning the second set, after 13 hours of games, I am surprised anyone was still standing. The game finished at 10:15pm, passed my bedtime. In eighteen years of watching the Lady Cats I think this is the best team ever. They play as a team, they block shots, and all seem to pass the ball, which is where each play starts, and they get a high percent of serves in. They will be in opposite brackets with Piute and I think they will meet for the State Championship. One of the girls on the Piute team, mother, Brooke Gleave, a teacher at Animony, was injured in a one car accident on her way to work. Brooke’s family says she is doing well, she wanted to thank all for their concerns. Hope to see you at State, Brooke. There was a fun tournament at Richfield on Friday and Saturday. There was 4 brackets with 4 teams, 1, 2, and 3A teams took part. Panguitch won its bracket on Friday and played in another bracket on Saturday morning, where they only lost one game to Delta. Panguitch was the only undefeated team in the tournament and there was Piute winning the other bracket. Piute beat Rich, and in the final brackets Panguitch played Rich and won in three games. Piute played Delta and took them out. We had another rematch with two region 20 teams, Panguitch and Piute, with Panguitch holding on in three games. Panguitch and Piute picked up some very valuable experience from this tournament, both teams played eight games. Panguitch are the champions of the tournament. State will be next Friday and Saturday at UVU, hopefully I will have the times for the state games next week. October 30th the SYMPHONY OF THE CANYONS will present “A spooky night” in Panguitch. If costumes are your passion, come dressed in your favorite Halloween outfit, (see this Sevy’s) there will be prizes. Otherwise just come and enjoy the music. The Panguitch Lions are sponsoring this event and it’s free. It will be at the County Fair building at 7:30 p.m. Call Karran at 676-8032 if you have any questions. The Stake primary leaders are looking for Boy Scout and Cub Scout shirts. It cost about $70.00 to dress a scout. The extension fee of $30 on your Questar bill has come to an end, two months early, actually this was supposed to be there for 3½ years longer. I know this sounds like I am beating a dead horse, but there is a person out there that is still blaming the teachers for the problems of the school district. At the district board meeting in Panguitch, the school board agree to restore the steps and lanes, on a vote 4 to 1, while cutting 5 days from the school year, as the State recommended. Steps and lanes only affect half of the teachers, whereas the 5 days affect every employee in the district. It shuts the schools down and saves on heating, electricity and transportation. This is a saving to the district of about $130,000. Each teacher is losing about 10 per cent on health care and on 5 days of lost wage. The teachers would love to be in school on these days, because that’s what they do. This problem is the fault of the School Board, not the teachers, so if you don’t understand the problem, please call me at 676-2418. The Share and Care will be open today Thursday the 22, Seniors citizens come early, 1:00 to 5:00, Friday 2 to 5 and Saturday 11am to 2. This will be Kelly Anderson last week at the food bank. Kelly has managed the food bank for the last three years. She would like to thank Rob Veater for all his help over that time. Rob has made an abandon building into one of the finest food pantry in the state. She would like to thank also all of the great volunteers that have served faithfully and helped make our facility the finest in the state. Thank you Kelly for all that you have done for the needy in Garfield County. Keep the good stuff coming. Mack O. William Edward Bercich, 87, passed away October 12, 2009 in Panguitch. Online guestbook at: www.maglebymortuary.com THE SUNDIAL A few days back I put a sundial out in our front yard. Some other person dug the hole so it was not too hard. There’s kind of a little pointy thing, and numbers, and so forth, And the sun throws a shadow, or something, if it happens to be in the North? Am I to suppose that time just stops when the sun goes away at night? Maybe that’s why my alarm has to ring just before it gets light. How does the sun compute the hour, and why should it really care. I should think it would melt its watch, a-blazin’ away up there. How a sundial functions I really do not know. I checked it out and couldn’t tell you where the batteries go. Maybe I missed some little gizzy where you have to wind it. So what do you do if it snows three feet, and you can’t even find it? Time is of the essence! You hear that once in a while. Time might not exist if you depend on an old sundial. Poems written by Ray Conrad www.raymondconrad.com |
