Show September 10, 2009 IN OUR TOWN FYI PANGUITCH I write this column on Saturday and Sunday so if the news is a week late you will know why. Friday night the Panguitch Fire Fighters were out collecting donations MDA (Jerry’s kids). They again reach the two thousand dollar mark, from the generous donations. Many from town contributed, but Friday is the day everyone goes to Lake Powell and they are in a giving mood. Panguitch just received a slurry coat early in the week and they haven’t painted the lines back, the fire fighters were dodging traffic all evening. We went to the volleyball game last night, this is the second game that we have been at and the girls are very good, I don’t think they’ve lost a match this year. I think some of them are playing club ball, there is a league in Cedar City. Troy Norris, in all years we have lived here has always had a competitive team, its all from hard work. He and his wife AnnMarie start with the girls when they are in the fourth grade. There are only 2 seniors on this team, so expect them to be good for some time. The girls next two games are on the road, September 9 at Bryce Valley and September 11 at Valley. The annual Sophomore tourney will be Saturday September 12th. The baseball team will be away also at Valley on September 9th. A nice young lady from Escalante informed me that I was wrong about Escalante not having a girl’s basketball coach. She said there is an excellent coach in town; they just don’t have enough girls that are interested in playing Bball. Speaking of Escalante, I was reading my American Legion news letter and two girls from Garfield County received Scholarships from Girls State. They are SUU scholarships for 2010-2011 and are worth $3500. The girls both have the same first name, Kelsey Torgersen from Escalante and Kelsey Matthew from Panguitch. Jan Frandsen is the one who recruits the students from Panguitch, to go to the American Legion Girls and Boys State. There are always girls willing to go to Girls State, but the boys don’t seem interested. Everyone that goes to State has a lot of fun and a good week learning about government in action, they also pick up 3 college credits in civics. Congratulations Girls. We can now send as many students to State that would like to go, they have to be Juniors. By: Mack Oetting Greg Payne put the finishing touches on the Lions fire place down at the City Park. He welded up a couple of racks that are on each end of the fire place, and they are for you to barbecue on. Please bring your own barbecue briquettes and put them on the second tier so the ashes can be taking out, please no wood. The Lions have been working on this project for sometime, they rocked over the old brick foundation and this was slow work. The Lions Club has plans to replace the old park tables; this will take several years, because of the cost. The exercise program is going well at the senior center, with a lot of participation. I read in AARP that exercise with companionship is really better for you than just exercising by yourself. If you are interested in an exercise program that is a little more strenuous, Denise Dastrup has a group that meets ever Tuesday morning at 5:30 am, at the High School gym and Saturday morning at 8:30am. Denise says they work with light weights and high repetitions; there are already 6 or 7 taking part in this program. The Shed Inc. our local sporting goods store is having their grand opening today. This is a well outfitted store and has all your outdoor needs. There were hot dogs for those were looking for some lunch. Randy said that they had a very busy day and gave out over a hundred and thirty hot dogs. They have a very good looking logo and their shirts were selling like hot cakes. The hunting season is on us, with the archery hunt starting off the fun. If Randy and Matt Houston don’t have an item they will get it for you. The Social event of the fall will held on October 9th. The Hospital Foundation annual fund raiser dinner will be held at the fair building at 6pm. There will be a silent and a regular auction, and it will be a great place to pick up some real bargains. I believe there will be the Thrift Store Babes, the best looking and classiest women in town will be modeling some of their wares. Tables will go for $150 and will seat 8; single tickets will be at $20.00. Evelyn Black is in charge this year and we will have more information coming. Evelyn says that the thrift store is having a banner year, and has already surpassed last year business. The ladies that faithfully volunteer at the store get deserve the credit for the stores success. They display and place the trea- Page 5 The Garfield County Insider sures that are there, in a very pleasing manner. I drove the bus for the cross country boys and girls track team. There were 29 runners and the 7th and 8th graders also ran. The race was a region meet and was held at the Piute Reservoir. Panguitch boys took 2nd place. Piute’s team was something else they took 9 of the first ten places, and their first place runner was a minute a head of everyone else. They might as well mail Piute the state trophy. Katie Rosser took third for the girls and she is only a 10 grader, expect big things from Katie by the time she a senior. Catania Holman took first place for the girls in the 7th and 8th graders. Danny Yardley and Gen Houston are the coaches and have made running fun for the kids. Both run with their teams Gen can’t quite keep up with Katie, but Danny still has it over the boys. Frank Houston the Middle school math teacher, was there coaching the Middle School runners, this guy is the best motivator I have ever been around. He compliments all the runners, running that far, and telling them what a great achievement they’ve made. Frank was voted as the outstanding 1A wrestling referee for 2009. Frank was inducted into the UVU Wrestling Coaches’ Hall of Fame back in 2003. Frank is one of a kind, and the kids love him. Panguitch has a number of recovering patients; Gayleen Burdick is home at the care center recovering nicely from a four way bypass operation and should be home before long. David Orton and Kelly Anderson are recovering from surgery. Neil Barton had a knee replaced and managed to injury his foot playing with his bobcat loader. All are doing well. There is a primary election for the Mayor of Panguitch City on September 15. There are four candidates for this position, you can vote early today and Friday or on Tuesday. The two top vote winners will be in the general election in November. Normally the primary turnout is pitifully low, the Mayors position is important to the citizens of our town, the indifference of the voters, leads only to poor results and an outcome you could possible not be happy with. There are perks for writing this column; I got invited over to Juanita Talbot’s house for some birthday cake. Keep the good stuff coming, Mack O. J.W.
