Show tHe lAuGhiNg pOiNt!! IN OUR TOWN FYI PANGUITCH There is an old joke about why we celebrate the 24th, it is because it’s the last day of summer! Well this year it was very true, Pat had some of her Classmates from the double nickel Class of 55, for root beer floats and we had to put on coats and yes it even rained a little bit. Next year the Class of 55 will have their 55th year reunion; Pat said they all graduated when they were 10 years old. The Panguitch 1st ward Scouts put on an excellent breakfast to start off the 24th, they were very well organized, each ward has a Scout troop, so they only put on a breakfast once every three years and it is one of the best fund raisers the Scouts have. Our family really appreciates the holiday flag project as well. The Parade was one of the best ever, or so I was told, by my neighbor. When you ride in it, you don’t get to see much. I think that all of the kids had their candy bags full, and most of them got to cool off thanks to the fire department. Hey Caryl Englestead, the Rhythm Band was great, good to see all of the new players, and the songs were a nice touch, it pays to advertise. Tracy Armstrong was the Grand Marshall along with his wife Lynn and family. I talked to Lynn about their trip to Nauvoo and she said it was wonderful. Tracy was so excited about the trip that he had very little pain the whole trip. Lynn said she had never seen Tracy that happy in a long time. Lynn was able to get Tracy out of bed into his wheelchair, she did a lot of praying for help and she was able to do things she didn’t think possible. I know how difficult it is to lift someone by yourself, maybe I would have been better trying it Lynn’s way. As usual the Fire Fighters and their spouses put on an excellent dinner, it is good to see so many of the young fire fighter lending a hand. That meat is very hot when it comes out of the fire pit and is really hard to pull apart while your hands are burning. They put the meat in the pit 8 hours longer and it was very tender, none of it had to be cut with a knife. FYI all the proceeds go to buy equipment for the fire engines. A lot of work goes into this dinner, both before and the clean up after, most everyone stayed till the end. There was a rodeo Friday evening, followed by Rockin Rick’s cowboy dance. Kamrie Orton cowgirl and barrel racer was selected second attendant at the Piute Rodeo Queen contest. Kamrie rode in the Piute’s, Marysville Parade, way to go Kamrie. Next time you are down town check out the stores, the owners have really fixed up their stores, and take great pride in their business. Joe’s market is one of the cleanest markets you will ever go into, since Joe and his wife Nan bought the store, it has come into 21 century. They just resurfaced the parking lot and had new parking lines drawn. Joe’s has the best meat in Southern Utah, and Page 5 The Garfield County Insider July 30, 2009 By: Mack Oetting you can buy what you need, instead of pre packaged, like the big chain markets. Leland’s Chevron and the post office both had their parking lots resurfaced. H&R is remodeling and are still open, you need to go into the east entrance; if H&R doesn’t have it you don’t need it. The Thrift Store has had a lot of face lifting going on, both inside and out back. The store did $4,000 worth of business during the month of June, with the money going to buy equipment for the Hospital. Randy and Matt Houston had a mini opening of their new sporting goods store on the 24th. They will have the Grand Opening during the County fair in a couple of weeks. Their store will be hunting, fishing gear, archery equipment and you will be able to order sporting good supplies. So save your gas going to Cabellas, the name of their store is Shed/Inc. Randy is now retired and will be able to serve your every need. Rick Minor and his son Clinton have opened a garage at the Big Four service center. They are a complete auto service and repair, and Rick is a certified locksmith. There are a lot of family and high school reunions going on last weekend. Our neighborhood was one big celebration, probably the same for yours. The 24th is a good time for reunions. Kenny Roe didn’t need the projector that I wrote about last week, he actually used a computer to show his Panguitch history pictures. Kenny Roe and Don Marshall entertained us with some very good stories, including the watermelon heist and the 2 seater outhouse on the old high school front lawn. Grace Sandburg passed away at her home. Everything you wanted to know about her was in her name GRACE. Her parents really knew what they were doing when they gave her that name. Grace was at the Spry Cemetery sitting in a gazebo that she and her family donated to the cemetery when the fire I started, was burning towards her, when she was told to leave, she said she wasn’t going to let the fire burn up her bench. Grace and Rex had 12 children, 50 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Grace was supposed to ride on the 1st Ward’s float, “Women of Courage”, her spirit was very much riding with the rest of these truly strong women. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that you donate the money to the Spry Cemetery fund so that the benches can be anchored and a Spry Cemetery directory made available. Send donations to Lorraine Owens, secretary, or Mike Tebbs who represents the Spry cemetery on the Cemetery Board. Pat’s friend Shirley White husband, Dee, passed away last week. They lived in Summit, and when anyone had a birthday in town, Dee would telephone them very early and wished them a happy birthday and told them to get-up and enjoy their day. Dee’s obituary said in lieu of flowers, “call a friend and wish them a happy birthday”. What’s in a name, in sports it mean’s a lot. Does anyone watch a golf tournament if Tiger Woods isn’t playing? I rarely watch the NBA games since Stockton and Malone retired. I think Labron James is as good a player, since Wilt that I have seen. Wilt was one of a kind, I could fill a whole article of his feats. King James fits this mold and he is only 24 years old. What has brought this comment about is the Tour de France. I bet no one can tell me who won the Tour the last three years, however Lance Armstrong came out of retirement after 3 years and the whole world is watching. World wide, 60% more people are watching the race than last year. Armstrong has taken 3rd place, he broke his arm earlier in the year and wasn’t even expected to be there. He is coming back next year with a new team and it should be a fun race for at least another year. Can you believe it, they are having back to schools sales! Where has our summer gone? It is time to use that fishing pole a few more times and start planning the “hunt”. This is for you K.M. Keep the good stuff coming. Mack O. Oil Farm A man stopped by a booming oil field in southern Kentucky to give a lift to a man on his way to the county seat. They drove through once beautiful farm land now scarred by bulldozers and drilling rigs, cluttered with pumps and storage tanks. Guessing that his passenger was a farmer living in the area, the driver steered the conversation to the tall tales he had heard of quick riches for both speculators and farmers. The local man acknowledged that many of the stories were founded on fact. “You own a farm here?” the driver asked. “Yeah,” was the reply. “Any oil wells on it?” “Yeah, three good ‘uns and they say they’ll each make 300 barrels a day.” “What in the world are you going to do with all the money you’ll be getting?” The farmer gazed across a machine-scarred field for a moment and answered, “Why I’m gonna buy me a farm that ain’t got on oil on it!” 1. Split dead limb into fragments and shave one fragment into slivers. 2. Bandage left thumb. 3. Chop other fragments into smaller fragments. 4. Bandage left foot. 5. Make a structure of slivers (including those embedded in the hand). 6. Light match. 7. Light match. 8. Repeat “A Scout is cheerful” and light match. 9. Apply match to slivers, add wood fragments, and blow gently into base of flames. 10. Apply burn ointment to nose. 11. When fire is burning, collect more wood. 12. When fire is burning well, add all remaining firewood. 13. After thunderstorm has passed, repeat the above steps. Computer Trouble I was having trouble with my computer. So I called Richard, the 11-year old next door whose bedroom looks like Mission Control, and asked him to come over. Richard clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem. As he was walking away, I called after him, “So, what was wrong?” He replied, “It was an ID Ten T error.” I didn’t want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, “An, ID Ten T error? What’s that? In case I need to fix it again.” Richard grinned. “Haven’t you ever heard of an ID Ten T error before?” “No,” I replied. “Write it down,” he said, “and I think you’ll figure it out.” So I wrote down: I D 1 0 T I used to like the little twirp. Raising Children A elderly gentleman was strolling through a quiet residential neighborhood when he came upon a little boy sitting on the curb, crying. “What’s the trouble, son?” he asked. “Are you lost?” “Worse than that,” the youngster sobbed. “Mom lost her book on child rearing and now she’s using her own judgement!” It Makes Sense...By Veda Hale Bernice Henrie Miller sent me something about aspirin. It said it was a good idea to keep aspirin by your bed side. If you wake up with chest pain to dissolve two tablets in your mouth, (hurry it along by chewing) tell someone you think you are experiencing a heart attack and then don’t lie back down, keep sitting up until help comes. Some people don’t wake up, but die in their sleep. Sounds like a good way to go. Some signs of trouble are sweating and nausea. Not always is pain experienced in the arm radiating into the chin area. I checked with some reliable sources on the internet and it is true about the aspirin, but it is not recom- Summer sizzles every Friday night Prime Rib Special $16.95 Choice of 2 sides + fresh homemade bread 5 pm to 9:30 pm Bryce Canyon Pines Hwy 12, Milepost 10 Miner’s Auto Repair Complete Auto Service & Repair 475 East Center St. • Panguitch, Utah • 435-676-8994 Oil Change $21.95 + tax Most Cars & Trucks up to 5 quarts How to Build a Campfire Diesel Oil Change Most light trucks up to 12 quarts $49.95 NAPA OIL & FILTERS mended to try the coughing thing that has often been talked about. The reason is that there are different kinds of heart attacks and with at least one you could die with the cough. The best advice is to get help as quickly as possible and don’t lie down while waiting--that after you take the two aspirin. This reminds me of advice I gave a while ago about strokes. If someone shows signs of confusion, complains of numbness on one side of their body or their speech thickens, get them to a doctor quick, because if help is had within three hours, the most terrible results can often be avoided or made much less bad. But one other thing I heard about doing, which I can’t find any reason not, is to give them an “Irish Coffee”, which is coffee with a shot of whiskey in it. Of course, around here, those two things might be hard to come by. This is said to reduce the bad effects of a stroke. Probably shocks the circulation system and keeps things going until help can be had. But midnight last I stepped outside to check on the health of heaven. I couldn’t sleep. I don’t count sheep, so I went out on the south deck, And lo and behold, a cloudyish night had turned out clear as heck. The Milky Way was a solid track right over the Boulder Top, And all the constellations were glittering bright, non-stop. A few airliners, high and alone, were taking part in the show. Clear or cloudy, they’re always there, going wherever they go. Ursa Major was up there, looking all Big Dippery, Thing of it is, ‘though it’s still July, the weather was getting nippery. I liked the show, but I had to go, before I got something froze. I had only got up for a bathroom break, and didn’t have on no cloze. Poems written by Ray Conrad www.raymondconrad.com |
