Pat Dix PANGUITCH 10 AND UNDER IMPRESSIVE IN CAL RIPKIN “A” TOURNAMENT by Clint Barney Faced with the decision to play in the state “B” tournament where Panguitch was 3-0 against the eventual winner Kanab, or play in the “A” tournament against bigger communities, the Panguitch coaches decided to challenge this group of youngsters and participate in the Southern Utah State “A” tournament held in Gunnison on the 15th and 16th of July. Daring to go where no other Panguitch Team has went (at least to my knowledge, no other Panguitch team has entered the “A” tournament at this young of age), the young All-Panguitch team entered the 10 and Under “A” Southern State Tournament as a huge underdog. The twelve team field was comprised of one 1A team (Panguitch), two 2A teams, and nine 3A teams. In the first game, Panguitch defeated the host Gunnison team 3-2 in a real pitchers duel. Dason Houston started on the mound and proved to be up to the challenge as he allowed 1 run over the first three innings. The coaches rolled the dice, and replaced Dason with Trey Barney for the final three innings. Trey was equally up to the task, as he allowed only 1 run over the remaining 3 innings. The Gunnison team tried a different strategy, as they allowed their ace to pitch a complete game. It looked as if the Gunnison gamble would pay off, as they led 2-1 going into the last inning. Panguitch loaded the bases after Jace Eyre was hit by a pitch, Konnor Huges got an infield single, and Dason Houston singled to left. With the bases loaded and one out, Trey Barney’s double to left scored Jace and Konnor and gave Panguitch a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the 6th, with runners on 1st and 2nd for Gunnison, Hunter Hatch speared a hot liner and touched first for an unassisted double play to seal the victory for the bobcats. In the second game, Panguitch lost a real heartbreaker 9-8 in extra innings to tournament favorite Juab. Dason Houston again started on the mound, and held the big bats of Juab to only 3 runs in the first 3 innings. Kolby Taylor came on and did an outstanding job in relief holding the opponents to no runs in his first two innings of work. With two outs and runners on first and second, Panguitch still lead 8-3 and looked to be on the verge of a remarkable upset. However, Juab’s bats awoke, and after a few big hits and costly errors the inning ended in an 8-8 tie. When all the dust had settled and the extra inning had been completed, Juab dealt Panguitch a devastating loss. Dason Houston, Kolton Owens, and Hunter Hatch all had outstanding games at the plate, and Korbin Leach turned in a couple of defensive gems at second base. In the third game, an elimination game, Panguitch defeated South Sevier 8-7. Dason Houston was tough as usual on the mound, and didn’t allow a run over his 3 innings of work. Kolby Taylor came on in the forth and continued the shutout through the fifth. However, in the sixth inning the young Panguitch pitchers began to feel the pressure. Panguitch led 8-0 going into the last inning, but with the bases loaded and two outs, South Sevier had the tying run on third base. In an ending only appreciated by those who watch 10 year olds play, Trey Barney through a wild pitch that catcher Koton Owens hustled back to the screen to gather up. In one motion, Kolton gathered the ball and threw a strike to a diving Trey at the plate who tagged the runner out. Whew! Panguitch wins 8-7 in dramatic fashion....... just like the coaches drew it up!!!! Carson Brown had an outstanding day at the plate, as he had two triples in this contest. In the forth game, another elimination game, Panguitch was defeated by Carbon 11-8 in extra innings. Trey Barney started the game and allowed 5 runs over the first three in- nings. He gave way to Dason Houston who was solid once again and gave everything he had to keep his team in the game. Panguitch trailed 8-7 going into the last inning, where Jack Gillett led off the inning with a huge triple. After one out, Konnor Huges singled to bring Jack home and send the game into extra innings. With Dason out of innings, Panguitch did all they could to win the game, but Carbon proved to be a little better and eventually sent the Panguitch team home with another tough defeat. In the end, Panguitch came out of the tournament with a 2-2 record. Three of the games were decided by 1 run, and both losses were in extra innings. Needless to say, the young Panguitch team created a buzz with their outstanding play. Hats off to the coaches and players of this 10 and under team. In all my years of watching and coaching youngsters, I have never been more proud of a team. In my opinion, this team gave up individual trophies in the “B” tournament to challenge themselves in a much more competitive “A” tournament. By finishing 5th in the “A” tournament, this team has set a standard of excellence for all Panguitch teams to follow. All of the players played well, and while not all of the kids are mentioned in this report, there wasn’t one of them that didn’t come up with a huge hit or big defensive play. Way to go!!!!
